Summary
A month after France and Frank Harkness, Slough House is floundering beneath the weight of grief none of them quite know how to deal with. Fortunately, Catherine has returned, and she’s determined to fix things — starting with River, who’s carrying a secret that’s affecting how he acts both with her and with Lamb — until she and River are kidnapped from Slough House by a group of former slow horses that have a very serious bone to pick with Jackson Lamb.
It will be fine. Catherine knows that Lamb will come for River, and River knows that Lamb will come for Catherine, and until he does they simply have to keep the other alive long enough to be found. But what they’re not expecting is that these former slow horses don’t just want to hurt Lamb; they want to break River, and force Lamb to watch it happen.
But the former slow horses have made a significant error of judgement. With every recording they send of River’s torture, the more determined Lamb becomes to rescue his boy, and when he finally does get River and Catherine back he is never going to let them go. It’ll be a long, difficult road to recovery, but they’ll walk it together, all three of them.

Then Jamie, knuckles bruised before he even realized he’d thrown a punch. Jamie, standing there in his socks. Jamie, looming above his Da as his Da skittered back across the tile, fingers to his jaw, curled protectively around the soft parts of his stomach. Jamie, the monster. “No, Eds, wait, wait. That came out all wrong.” And Charles clutches Edwin’s hand tighter, so Edwin clutches back, taking strange comfort in the curve of Charles’s fingers, the ridge of his knuckles. Terrain that is somehow more familiar to Edwin than the paths he’s carved through Hell. “What I meant is, I’m not ever gonna be, like, in love with you. Romantically. I just—” His inhale is a juttering scrape of breath excavated from deep inside, and Edwin feels it as though it is his lungs that draw it in. “I love you, Edwin. I’ve always loved you. And after you confessed in Hell, I thought—well, I thought what I felt for you had to change. But it didn’t, and it won’t. I’m never gonna have a romantic notion towards anyone in the entire world, and I love you, and it’d be aces to kiss you.”

After the walk-in debacle on Friends and Family night, Carmy is trying to make up for his mistakes by pushing himself to be better. But between the voice in his head telling him he’s worthless, his own wholehearted belief in everything that voice is saying, and his desperation to not let anyone see that there’s something severely wrong with him, things are going to shit fast — so when the hospital calls to inform him that his mother’s been in an accident and is going to need a caretaker for a while, Carmy takes the chance to do something right for once. It’ll be fine. He can handle it, and it’ll be fine.
He cannot handle it, and it isn’t fine. One night at Donna’s, everything goes catastrophically to shit and Carmy’s left with an open, bleeding wound in his hand and the suffocating realization that nobody’s coming to save him. But the people who love him are nothing if not determined to prove him wrong. They’re going to get him out of that house. They’re going to be there as his hand heals. They’re going to hug him, and cook for him, and remind him how it feels to laugh. And whenever he begins to believe that he doesn’t deserve any of it, they’ll be there to prove just how much he matters to them.

“You didn’t get a concussion,” Not-Sam rushed to reassure him.
“And we haven’t gone through a time machine,” said Not-Roy, and then, after an electric-wire pause: “But you might have.”

Summary
At the end of 4x05, Patrice abducts River at gunpoint. This time, they go to a remote, isolated manor where Frank is waiting for them. The slow horses do not see or hear from River again for almost five months. During that time, Frank does his level best to break River and rebuild him into a tool he can use, with Patrice as his assisting shadow. This… doesn’t really work. In fact, the process ends up breaking not River, but someone else.
Meanwhile, Slough House is on overdrive trying to find a missing colleague who the Park is all to quick to deem presumed dead and rubber-stamp his file as such. Louisa almost quits, and finds an odd solace in working alongside Lamb to try to bring their missing agent home. She is having a bad one - the maybe-loss of her best friend is tearing her apart.
It all comes to a head when Louisa follows a lead that she knows better than to follow. She is meant to be the last blow that destroys River's resolve. It doesn't shake out like that. By the time they're both rescued, it's a long road to recovery. But there is a road, and there's help along the way.

Summary
The problem is River.
Or, more specifically, it’s the way that every time Louisa blinks, the afterimage of River laying on the ground between those shelves, covered in debris, is burned into the backs of her eyelids. It wouldn’t have been so bad, probably, if he hadn’t had to take off immediately to deal with that folder, or if Louisa had said fuck the debrief and gone with him. If they hadn’t been separated right after making it out of the hatch, they — or, at least, Louisa would probably be fine.
But they were. Separated.

Post season 3. Louisa and River share a bowl of dry cereal, a difficult conversation, and a bed, in that order.

“So what’re you doin’ for your birthday, Coach?”
The question’s so unexpected, asked so abruptly, that it almost sends Roy sprawling out of the rhythmic jog he’s fallen into at Jamie’s side and straight to the gravel below.
As it is, he skids to a quick stop and faces his star player, arms held stiffly at his sides. Waits for Jamie to notice he’s gone and hurriedly circle back to stand in front of him before replying. Quick feet and a quicker smile; the professional-menace doesn’t seem to care that he’s brought Roy to a dead-stop with just his words.
“The fuck did you just say?”
In which Roy experiences the mortifying ordeal of being loved and Jamie bakes a cake.
