Charles lets his gaze wander through the apartment, taking in the details with that quiet curiosity Max knows too well. He stops in front of the trophies lined up on a shelf — the replicas of Max’s championships and the original, gleaming in the center. For a second, admiration flickers across Charles’s face. Max knows that look; he knows Charles wants that feeling someday, and part of him can’t blame him.
Charles turns, and Max sees a quiet smile on his face before it fades. “I, um… I received an invitation. From… The Invitation,” he starts, clearing his throat, and Max notices the nervous way his hands fidget.
“Ah, what an original name. Congratulations?” Max offers, barely containing a smirk.
Charles narrows his eyes, exasperation creeping in. “There’s a catch.”
“Do I even want to know?”
“They also invited you.”
Max’s expression morphs into an exaggerated look of shock, complete with wide eyes and raised brows. “Wow, what a shame, then.”
OR: Max and Charles are invited to appear together on a popular podcast. They have a lot to talk about and a lot of tension building up.

Max rolls over in bed and pulls the pillow over his ears in a sad attempt to drown out his new neighbor's horrible, French-accented voice. He looks at the alarm clock on the bedside table and groans when see it was only 5:46 in the fucking morning.

Max honestly just wanted to sleep. But then there was this new neighbor who woke up every day at what should've been considered an inappropriate hour to sing loudly, very off-key, and completely out of rhythm. And then there was this incredibly hot guy Max met every day in the elevator.

The bar has log cabin walls, dim lights, and a low ceiling. Country songs he never plans on knowing twang through the speakers, and there’s a general glow of liveliness throughout the swaying crowd. The place was just far enough off the beaten track that Charles wonders if anyone here knows who he is. They certainly don’t give him a second’s glance as he slips by, trying to find an empty spot at the bar.
“Ah-ha!” Carlos slides up next to him and gives him a studious once-over. “You are late, though I suppose it is because you had to get pretty, hm?”
“Pretty?” Charles asks, rolling his eyes and raising an eyebrow at Carlos’s outfit — a vaguely wrinkled t-shirt and sweatpants that look more expensive than his jeans. “I am sorry I did not want to show up in my pajamas.”
“I am quite done with dressing up and, more importantly, do not have someone to impress."

Summary
A hand brushes his back, the ghost of a touch, and he turns just in time to grab the card Max is slipping into his palm before weaving back through the crowd of the press pen. For a moment, Charles stands frozen and confused, trying to understand what exactly happened. In his hand is the card for a hotel, the room number scrawled in sharpie underneath the address.
Charles stuffs the hotel card into his pocket until he can huddle into the brief safety of his driver’s room. He stares at it for almost too long, trying to figure out where the night would go if he took up Max’s proposition. There’s no decent indicator to Max’s mood today, twenty-second penalty be damned. He’s been level-headed and smooth in every glimpse Charles has gotten of him, not a lick of emotion betraying him in those squinting blue eyes. In Monza, Charles had been soaring, and Max had been wanting. In Singapore, Max had been gutted, and Charles was willing to do whatever it took to help. Austin was a glowing, alcohol-softened fantasy that ended with an easy morning and gentle hangover. Everything had been perfect last week, but now— Charles isn’t sure what to think.

Summary
Max bites his tongue against a laugh, as he gets close. He reaches out, then quickly pulls his hand back before he makes contact, as an alternative occurs to him and he instead leans in to blow a sharp breath against Charles’ ear.
Charles lifts his head with a jerk, a ripple of discontent across his shoulders, and there’s only the sparest moment between when he sees Max and when his hand swings back, lightly smacking Max against the arm in retaliation. “Max?” He hisses, his eyes trailing up and down Max’s front with evident judgement against his last-last season suit trousers, or whatever. “What are you doing here?”
“Community service,” Max says, as he settles in beside Charles with a crooked turn to his mouth. He admittedly may have bought something new, if he had known Charles would be here. “You?”
“Oh,” Charles intones, nose slightly curling, as he turns to look back out against the crowd while slipping his phone into a pocket. “Ferrari obligation.”
Max grunts under his breath. “This is what you get.”
Charles hums a low question.
“For saying you do not want to do service with me.”

Summary
Charles could only watch in growing horror as Max turned the glass over and drank the pink liquid in just a few gulps. He lowered the glass with a sigh and wiped the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand, then looked at Charles.
“This is really good. What kind of drink is this?” he asked, looking curiously at the glass and then back at Charles.
But Charles was too busy staring at the way his naturally blue eyes flickered and turned pink before returning to normal to think to answer. A sure sign that the potion had worked after all.

OR Charles is a young wizard determined to prove his worth by brewing a love potion. This time nothing could go wrong - no fires or explosions.
So of course Max fucking Verstappen had to go and take the damn potion.

“Hey! Who the hell are you?!” An angry voice yelled, making Charles let out a scream. And with heart hammering in his chest, he spins on his heels. Without thinking much about the situation, Charles threw the small jar he was holding towards the intruder. The jug flew towards the man's head in a well-aimed throw. However, it was with complete astonishment and horror that Charles saw it go through the guy and crash against the wall. The man - unfairly attractive, his stupid brain couldn't help but notice, despite the damn situation - slowly turned around and stared at the mess on the floor with a blank expression, then turned back to Charles. With his blond eyebrows rising, almost to his hairline, he asked: “Did you just fucking throw a jug at me, damn it?!”

Or the one where Charles buys an apartment and gets a grumpy, blonde ghost as a roommate; Lando is there for the chaos; Oscar is there for the pizza; and in the midst of all this, Max would have really appreciated the memo saying he was dead. There's also a cat. But, you know, not everything is what it seems.

“What happened to racing together for the next 15-20 years?!” Charles doesn’t even know why he's so upset—he only knows something feels wrong. Max, a little perplexed but calm as ever, simply offers, “Drive for Red Bull.”
Charles is stunned, the anger momentarily forgotten. “I don’t want to race for Red Bull if you’re not there.”
Max’s response? A cryptic, “Who says I wouldn’t be?”
Completely thrown off, Charles snaps, “You’re confusing me, mate!”
Max’s grin widens. “You want to win, right?”
Charles scowls. “Yes, but with Ferrari—and against you.”
Max shrugs. “That’s not gonna happen. Even Lewis couldn’t get his 8th in a Ferrari. But you could win with me.”
“Stop talking in riddles, Max!”
Max steps closer, lowering his voice. “Race for Red Bull, and I’ll be your engineer.”
Now it’s Charles who’s speechless.
