Hinata left all of Komaeda’s things exactly where he left them. A half-drunk cup of tea sat in their main dining room, rotting with time. An unfinished watercolor painting sat, pinned up to an easel, next to the window. The paper had begun to form the shape of waves, and the paint had been all but bleached out. Hinata could not bear to touch it—move it out of the sunlight; somewhere safe, somewhere where the tea won’t rot—not even when the memories attached started to grow stale and moldy.

Komaeda and Hinata’s breakup had not exactly been a harmonious agreement. It hadn’t been even remotely thought about on Hajime’s part, who had been unhealthily codependent and deeply drawn into the madness that Komaeda had been, the deep web of mental instability and trauma boiling over his kind and genuinely caring personality to the point of complete implosion.
It's been four years since then, and the last thing Hinata was expecting was Komaeda to return, very much alive, and from what he could see, very much okay.
