Will is quiet. After a beat, he says, in a small voice, “I’m — I’m fine. Who gave you this number?”
“Dustin,” Mike swallows, throat dry. There’s a million things he wants to say pulsing in his chest. He wants to ask why Will never told him that he was queer, why Mike had to discover through such inane neighbourhood gossip. He wants to ask what he did to make Will feel like he had to hide in such a violent world. He wants to ask why he cries in that video. He wants to ask if it really feels as good as he makes it look, eyes screwed shut, chest flushed. He wants to ask if he meant to say Mark, or Mike. He wants to ask if he imagined those lingering looks, those words, that feeling. He wants to ask if Will really never felt it, that blinding, all-encompassing love. He wants to ask if life has felt like a daze for him, as well, or if he’s awake rather than in a never-ending foggy dream. He wants to ask if there is anything he can do, or say, to get the Will Byers he knew back. But, instead, he says, “I, um.. I just wanted to – ah. I miss you. So. I, um. Asked. Yeah.”

Lucas, steadier, breaks the silence.
“Whose car was that?”
It takes Will a moment to answer. He blinks at the wall behind Lucas like he’s trying to rewind something in his head.
“I borrowed it,” he says finally.
Lucas tilts his head. “Really? From who?”
When Will Byers arrives at the WSQK radio station in a vandalized car none of them recognize, the walls he’s built start to crack. What slips out is a secret he’s been hiding in plain sight.
