wonderful fic, really enjoyed it.
just one small observation: reading “I could take her. Don’t you think so? How many reps does she do? I could take her.” as an actual gym rat was HYSTERICAL. like how many reps OF WHAT? is this some alternate reality where crossfit is the only type of strength training and every dudebro measures strength by idk number of kipping pullups done in a minute?
on the miniscule chance that there's someone reading my comment who might find this info useful, i'm gonna give a tip to anyone not familiar with gym culture: people measure strength most commonly by one rep maxes of specific, highly standardizable compound exercises like squat, bench and deadlift (there's snatch, c&j, ohp etc. too obviously, but these are way rarer and more specialized). the stereotypical gym bro will only care about bench, MAYBE squat or deadlift (and that's a big maybe). and for measuring strength no one goes for super high numbers of reps, cause at that point you have to use so light a weight that it's not even strength training anymore. type of exercise, weight lifted (and correct form) are what's immediately important when someone's measuring strength, with reps being secondary. no one's gonna flexx with their 12 rep max, and no one even knows their 30 rep max bc what's the point of that. with the only exception being pullups/muscle ups, where reps are actually impressive, but in that case it is specified that we're talking about those exercises. also not that many people flexx about those, bench and even the other two powerlifts are way more common ways for 2 random gym goers to measure strength against each other, often taking bodyweight relative to weight lifted into account as well.
so what a dudebro trying to call someone weak would actually say would be something like: "I bet she can't even bench the bar" or "I bet she can't even bench half a plate" or "I bet she needs a spotter for an empty bar" or something like that ((there's also a lot of arguments about squat depth, all aspects of bench technique (arch/grip/touch and go reps/leg drive etc.), sumo vs conventional deadlifts, straps for deadlifting, and SO much more, but i'm gonna spare that level of detail rn. just know that this goes DEEP, there's a lot of stuff gymgoers/bodybuilders/powerlifters like to argue about))
btw this didn't detract from the fic at all, really enjoyed it, and this small mistake gave me a good laugh. just wanted to write my thoughts down, bc it's not the first time i'm seeing someone make this mistake thinking reps are king (e.g. caitvi fanart, where vi is doing 70 REP SETS of bicep curls, either as the world's most inefficient form of cardio or trying to get rhabdomyolisis stat)
anyway ramble over, really liked the fic, and was nice to be able to geek out about lifting and gym culture here in the bookmark notes.

To call Enji Todoroki’s murder a scandal would be to understate it. To call it a national obsession would come much closer, yet still fail to capture a certain spirit around it.
It was an obsession of public conscience, with a frenetic, itchy, almost shameful energy roused from an entire society now reminded of the scandal 10 years back when Enji's eldest son took to the airwaves and revealed, in gruesome detail with a series of recorded tapes, the depths of Enji Todoroki’s domestic abuse. A scandal which Enji had gotten away with, entirely.
Suddenly, seeing the image of this man, now crumpled small and dead and ugly beside the dumpster of a waterlogged and grimy alley, sent him to the dogs. This man who was now no one’s hero and no one’s protector was no one worth protecting, anymore.
But perhaps the sad and ugly figure he cut dead and bloody in the putrid alleyway was only a fraction of the explanation for the public revolt against Enji. The stronger reason, alive where Enji was now dead, came in the form of the main suspect and man accused of Enji’s murder: his youngest son and the Number 2 Hero Shouto Todoroki.
