Summary
“I was looking forward to last night,” Rozanov says, soft. His pinky finger touches the back of Shane’s hand, just barely, feather light, as if Shane is something fragile.
Something is—off, that has nothing to do with the floaty feeling of the painkillers in his system. Rozanov is looking at him, and his gaze is weighted, pinning him in place. There are bags under his eyes and a slight tilt to the corner of his mouth and his pinky is hooked onto Shane’s and there’s something at the edge of Shane’s consciousness, like chasing a dream, that’s telling him he’s missing something, he’s supposed to remember something—
“I’m sorry,” Shane stammers out. “Did we have plans or something scheduled for last night? I’m having some trouble remembering.”

Summary
“So,” Ilya says, dragging the word out. He’s swiping at non-existent crumbs on the counter, avoiding his eyes. “You have dinner at parents on Christmas, yes?”
“Yeah.”
Ilya nods. “I can house-sit while you are away. Make place pretty, if you have decorations. Make it less boring.”
Shane’s eyebrows fly up. “What? You don’t want to come with?”
Finally, Ilya looks up at him. Hesitantly, he asks, “You want me to come with?”
Frowning, Shane says, “I– yeah. Yeah, of course. You think I invited you here just so you could spend Christmas alone?”
Looking away, Ilya shrugs. “I am intruder here, Hollander. You have family. I do not. Makes situation… difficult, maybe. You forget the world thinks we are rivals.”
“Not difficult,” Shane says immediately. “You want to come, you’re coming.”
Or: Ilya's in Montreal alone during the week leading up to the Winter Classic. Shane doesn't let him spend Christmas alone.

Summary
Rozanov cocked his head. “You speak Russian? Or just the curse words?”
“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”

Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. Instead of being branded as rivals from the very beginning, Ilya and Shane start off as friends.
And, after all, a little friendly rivalry never hurt anyone, did it?

Summary
The game had been long, and Shane Hollander had been a pain in the ass as usual. Not only because of his skill but also because he was distractingly pretty on the ice. These years somehow more so than when they had been Rookies. Or Ilya had just learned how to appreciate it, whatever that was supposed to mean. This newfound appreciation however didn’t help when he had to face off with Shane and he darted out his tongue to wet his lips. Distracting Ilya immensely, his mind wandering off to what Shane could do with that tongue. Or the times when Ilya shoved Shane against the barricade and felt his rival’s body underneath his. Only to be reminded of all the times Ilya had gotten Shane underneath him without all that protective gear.
---
They had been doing this for years by now. And by now they had a routine they stuck to. There was a city where their teams would play each other, there was a text and a suggestion for a place. Then they played the game and riled each other up. Afterwards, they met up in secret to fuck. That was what they did and what Ilya was used to.
Until Ilya received a text after their hook up that disrupted their routine for the first time after years.

Summary
Four times Ilya Rozanov reminded everyone exactly who the fuck they were dealing with (spoiler: still an asshole, still elite, still not going anywhere), and one time he didn’t have to be anything except soft.
Or being out didn’t make him nicer. Being married didn’t make him softer. Being older didn’t make him weaker. And being a father? Well. That’t when things get complicated.
(He’s really good at that last part. Don’t tell anyone.)
