The first time they’d been about six or seven years old. Joe never did figure out what prompted it. He knew Cherry was feeling down—it was obvious, with him so withdrawn and quiet, when he was usually neither of those things—but he had no idea why. Not that Cherry would have been likely to tell him if he’d asked.
He’d noticed Cherry staring at him, eyes flickering away guiltily every time Joe caught him. Joe wasn’t shy or sneaky the way Cherry was so he was just about to ask what was wrong when Cherry spoke up.
“Close your eyes,” Cherry sulkily demanded.
“Huh?”
Cherry scowled. “Would you close your eyes? Just for a sec?”
