The bailiff tittered for a moment, watching Edgeworth stumble, before blurting out, “Mr. Wright has been shot, Your Honor!”

Miles didn’t even know why they played this game, why they danced around what they both so desperately wanted, both refusing to cave in and admit defeat, letting the other win. And truly, neither of them ever admitted defeat, at least not without a fight.
Perhaps it was the thrill of the competition, perhaps it was the satisfaction when they finally had sex, perhaps it was because they were both petty and refused to lose, perhaps it was all three and so much more.
Either way, Miles refused to lose.

Phoenix’s heart is pounding when Edgeworth lifts his hand, but then he hesitates. In that moment of pause, Phoenix sees years of pressure weighing him down. Miles cried over folding a bad paper crane when he still had the father he idolized to tell him it was okay. Then he was fighting to be good enough in every aspect of his life, not even to be accepted, but to avoid being rebuked.
It’s okay, Phoenix wants to say. Not as a platitude but an assertion. They’re not going to be very good dancers and that’s okay.
Phoenix shoves past his own fear, past that nagging voice telling him to accept rejection. If he puts himself out there to be judged, silly and trivial as his fears may be, then maybe he’ll show Edgeworth how to do that too.

“Maya’s favorite,” Phoenix clarifies. Yours, too, he doesn’t add.
“Mm,” Edgeworth agrees, staring at Phoenix with a look he doesn’t quite recognize. Phoenix isn't sure if it’s a symptom of just waking up, but Edgeworth's features have none of the usual tenseness to them. He's all soft edges and relaxed shoulders as he indulges in a plate of strawberry pancakes and a cup of joe.
They eat in comfortable silence. Maya has politely refrained from asking why Edgeworth is joining them for breakfast, and every time Pearls starts to, Maya manages to change the subject.

Once the proper soaps and shampoos have been returned to Phoenix’s shower, Miles notices his partner examining himself in the mirror. Miles knows that face. It’s the brooding-about-one’s-appearance face. His own reflection wears it almost every time he sees it.
Phoenix has had to pull Miles away from his nitpicking enough times that he has a few ideas about how to proceed. His hands rest on Phoenix’s shoulders. “Dearest? Is something wrong?”
In the mirror, Miles watches Phoenix’s face shift to one of carefully wry neutrality. “Pssh. Nah, it’s nothing.”
Miles frowns. “You are such a hypocrite.”
“Never pretended not to be.”
