Summary
“Buckley, what are you doing? Get here. I need to talk to the husband. I will be back.” Buck snaps out when Chim’s voice reaches him, and when he tries to take a step, he is moving. He ignores the pain in his left leg when he steps on it. It is not real. It’s been months since it last hurt. It is not real.
Eddie turns to look at him when he enters his field of vision. His jaw is still clenched, and he narrows his eyes like he does when he is trying to understand Buck. They lock eyes for a moment, but it is over quickly. Eddie turns back to Lori. Focused. Buck just stands there, not knowing what to do, feeling useless. Last time it felt like this was at the lab. He failed to open the door. He failed to lift the rubble. He lost Bobby. Lori will lose he leg. He needs to do something. His leg throbs again. Reminding him it is there. It is not real. He remembers the ghost of a touch in his hands, the pressure of the hold. His legs move on their own. He climbs through the space left of Lori, taking her hand in his.
Or 09x03 emergency reminds Buck of some unpleasant memories.

"Kiss me."
Buck's hands freeze, the stroking stops. “...I’m sorry?”
“Kiss me.” Eddie doesn't know where this is coming from, except he does, actually—it's coming from the part of his brain that has been chewing on this problem for two days straight and has finally arrived at a solution. A terrible solution. A solution that makes perfect sense if you don't think about it too hard. "I need to know."

Summary
So in the middle of Eddie’s dining room, with his brain to mouth filter non-existent (as per usual), Buck blurts out, “Marry me.”
Eddie sits straight up, looking at him with eyes wide as saucers.
“Excuse me?”
“W-well, just think about it. If we get married I can add you and Chris to my insurance policy and that solves your problem.”
Eddie’s mouth forms a perfect little ‘o’. Buck waits patiently for the floor to open up and swallow him whole.
When the ground doesn’t do as he’d hoped he realizes he has to say something else. “Obviously, w-we don’t have to,” he’s quick to assure. “But if we did it would be platonic, of course, because you’re straight and–” he pauses, praying for another rogue stroke of lightning. Anything to put him out of his misery right now. “-and like I know that I’m bi now, but this wouldn’t be like that y’know? It would just be two friends helping each other out.” He’s rambling, the words won’t stop tumbling out. “Like a friends with benefits type situation! E-except you know not those kinds of benefits! Like actual benefits! Health and dental.”
or,
Eddie is moving to Texas, losing his insurance, and marrying Buck all very heterosexually and platonically.

Summary
Eddie has decided it’s time to find out what joy looks like to him.
Swearing off dating, he pours his energy into adoption papers, therapy, and late-night study hours to get certified as a paramedic.
Buck is trying to move forward too. He’s dating beautiful Camila, who seems like an ideal fit. Something about her dark hair, sharp canines, and competence as a nurse feels easy.
But between grief, tequila, and a newborn who refuses to sleep, moving forward starts to look like something else.
“Lizzie, meet Evan Phillip Buckley. We call him Buck. And Buck, meet Elizabeth Joy Diaz. We call her Lizzie.”
At the sound of her dad’s voice, Lizzie blinks, wide-eyed. Her eyes are large and still a pale shade of gray.
“Elizabeth Joy?” Buck asks.
“Yeah. She’s gonna hate it, isn’t she?”
Buck stifles a laugh. “If she has any taste.”
“So you don’t like it?”
Buck rolls his eyes, but his smile is wide and genuine, lighting up his whole face.
“I love it, Eddie. It’s perfect.” He turns his gaze back to the baby. So small, so soft. She looks impossibly fragile, yet perfectly safe and content in Eddie’s arms. “She’s perfect.”
