Summary
“You are not currently dead. But one day you will be, as will I. And when your time comes, it will be before mine.”
This is the truth, yes. Flins states it with such candor that Varka strangely finds himself wanting to laugh. How long is a typical lifespan in the eyes of a fae who can stretch the embers of his flames to a period that can only be described as a hair’s breadth away from eternity?
For Flins, how much of the candle burns between the words not yet and now?
Varka begins to notice Flins’s growing collection of specific items.

Summary
Kaveh fell in love for the first time at the tender age of eight, a love that pierced fiercely straight through him like an aching, chasmal wound. But eventually, the memory of his first love began to scab over, the edges fraying from reach as the wound strove to close and new memories rushed to take its place. Such that when he searches now for the gaping emptiness it would have left behind, all he finds instead is the skin that has grown over it and a subtle scar that whispers of something that once left its mark there. But of what Kaveh no longer remembers.
The forest, however, always remembers.

Summary
The man’s beauty and allure are like nothing Kaveh has ever seen before – palpably inhuman. Behind him, an unmoving, perpetual sunset casts a delicate light around his silhouette, encompassing him like the endless fields of flowers that encircle their bodies. Here, in dreaming, the air tastes sweet, and the fragrance of a bygone era wafts into Kaveh’s nose, devotedly mumbling unknowable promises in a language he does not recognize.
“Kaveh,” the man says to him, and the sound of his name falling from those elegant lips reminds him of the twinkling of little bells on a dancer’s costume, clear and precise.
The man places a hand on Kaveh’s cheek, leaning in closer and closer until he can feel the man’s breath on his own lips.
“Thank you for setting me free,” he says to Kaveh.
On a desert expedition, Kaveh stumbles upon a mysterious bottle where an ancient Jinni dwells.

Summary
Just as Kaveh turns away from the orange tree, Alhaitham’s mother blooms into a heartfelt laugh, a soft and melodic sound like the distant ringing of wind chimes. And he realizes that Alhaitham inherited his mother’s laugh, too.
“You truly love him,” she says in between chuckles. “Deeply and devastatingly so.”
Kaveh can’t help but burst into laughter himself, “Am I really that obvious?”
She nods, “You want to marry my son.”
“I do.”
Before proposing, Kaveh decides to find a way to meet with Alhaitham's family in order to properly ask for Alhaitham's hand in marriage.

Summary
Alhaitham allows his fingers to be maneuvered by the visitor’s careful, precise movements, and the letters gradually begin to form on the pages of his journal, an item he carries with him everywhere. Somehow, the man’s hold on him is painfully familiar, like the edges of a distant memory fraying from reach, each finger fitted so flawlessly between his own. The man’s breath against his ear as he leans in close is warm, and the heat of his body pressed against his side, too, is warm.
Beside this man, Alhaitham feels warm and safe. Like home.
In which certain things are not so easily resolved.

Summary
“I may seem perfectly tame. These teeth haven’t touched another’s flesh for centuries. And yes,” another soft smile, this one reaching Neuvillette’s eyes, glimmering with a soft sort of thrill, “I have lived as long as you suspect I have.”
Wriothesley swallows thickly before asking, “Your transparency comes at a cost. What will I give in return for my life?”
“We all desire something. I wonder what you crave?” Neuvillette’s jabot remains around his throat, beautiful frills, softening the sharp line of his jaw. “Knowledge, perhaps?”
- Duke Henry Wriothesley of Liffey is sent undercover, on behalf of The Crown, to make a deal with the Sovereign Heir of France's vampire, in the hopes of a longer lifespan. Serving his Queen as a vampire hunter, this is a risk he is willing to take in the pursuit of knowledge.

Summary
“Not what you expected, was it?” Varka asks, no longer able to keep his grin in check.
And Flins laughs — an honest, lilting sound that makes his chest seize, just a little.
In the flicker of a lantern’s glow, a Knight and a Lightkeeper share warmth, secrets, and something perilously close to affection.

Summary
Kaveh blinks again, and then the world falls back into place.
“What’s wrong?” a voice asks him from the side, and when he swivels his head around there stands Alhaitham, in his black turtleneck and chartreuse jacket and quizzical expression, and when Kaveh looks up again he finds that the sky is gone.
Kaveh experiences his very first dream.

Summary
What are you thinking? Gechen had asked Guizhong, placing a careful hand on her cheek. Her skin had felt paper-thin, as soft as glaze lily petals, as fragile.
Guizhong had leaned into the touch, closing her eyes. That nothing ever lasts, she murmured. Especially not when predicated upon dust.
The night before.

Summary
“Statue of Seven, in the image of the Geo Archon, Rex Lapis,” Guizhong reads. She looks up at the statue. Frowns. “Rex Lapis,” she rolls the word over her tongue. “A little too colourless to be him, aren’t you—”
“Are you here to pray to Rex Lapis?”
Guizhong flinches. She whips her head back, expecting a ghost—but it’s only a man, amber irises too bright in the dim lights. “This is a historical site,” she says, narrowing her eyes. “I don’t think anyone’s here to pray.”
His walk stops next to her. Exactly at her side—not an inch forward. “You’re right. No one prays to the old gods anymore,” he murmurs, a rueful upturn of his lips. “But I heard you whispering to the statue. Why did you invoke his name, if not to pray?”
ten thousand years later, a reunion.
