When they had made the appointment, it was specifically on his day off so that he and Abby could both be there, but he wouldn’t be surprised if she had planned this just to get back at him for the times he’d flaked on her for work.
Now that he’s met Ms. King, though, he was very thankful there was some five alarm emergency at the firm that had pulled her away.

“Well, half-joking, yeah.” He started backing into a parking spot, his body twisted towards hers so he could see behind them. “I will go to the wedding with you, though.”

He grinned again, immediately turning and dragging her the rest of the way through the trees into the clearing where the thirty-foot-tall rock wall stood ominously. A pit settled into her stomach.
“Never mind,” she said, turning back towards the trees.
“No!” Langdon yelled, grabbing her around the waist so that her back was pressed to his front and pulling her back awkwardly with him. “No takesies backsies!”

Summary
Langdon looks aghast. “What do you mean you haven’t seen Lord of the Rings?”
“I mean, it’s not intentional,” says Mel. “I just never got around to it. Plus, it does look kind of goofy – isn’t the villain an evil spotlight?”
Garcia laughs, but Langdon looks like she just shot his mother right in front of him.Series

Summary
That’s his bright spot, though—the thing he clings to on his first day, then continues to hold onto tightly thereafter: Mel.
Where he had felt out of step with everyone else, he and her were right on beat together, dancing around the ED, just as they had on her first day. He had been shocked how easily they picked up where they’d left off. There was no wariness towards him, no undercurrent of judgement, no hesitation to let him treat a patient. She didn’t hold him back, she pushed him forward. It was what he needed more than anything.

Summary
Frank notices more than Mel thinks.
---
“…Where did you get these?” [Mel] asked after a moment, and Frank could’ve sighed in relief. He had to school himself. Get it together, man.
“Tanner’s really into Bluey right now,” he said with a shrug. “I started carrying a few around with me whenever I leave the house, he’s pretty clumsy.”

Summary
Frank huffed, setting the mug down. “How many times are we going to have to go over this, Mel? I like listening to you talk. I’m not just being nice. We’re friends.”
“It’s important to ask,” she said, still watching him carefully. “Because sometimes people say they want to know something but they don’t actually mean that they do. They’re just being polite. And it’s hard for me to tell that, always.”
“I’ll tell you what,” he suggested. “Let’s make this easy. With me, you never have to ask. Consider it my… blanket approval, I guess.”
He pointed to himself. “I, Frank Langdon, am interested in what you have to say.”

Summary
Some nights were, naturally, worse than others.
Nights where Frank laid in bed for so long, staring at the ceiling, that it made his heart start to race with anxiety and his back ache and ache and ache no matter how he positioned himself. Nights where his thoughts spiraled out into worst-case-scenarios that seemed so vivid and inevitable that he would have to get up and go to the bathroom, just to turn the light on and look at himself in the mirror to remember what was actually real.
Those were the nights when he wanted the pills again the most: alone in his guest bedroom, trying to wring sleep out of his body like the last few drops of water out of a dirty dishcloth.
He tried not to call Mel on nights like that. He did not always succeed.

Summary
Mel King was a creature of habit.
There was a specific sort of choreography to her life beyond the chaos of the Emergency Department. A carefully controlled routine, a color-coded calendar, a rigid set of rituals that kept her grounded enough to keep showing up day after day, to keep on doing the work that was required of her to save lives.
Everything was going fine for Mel. Her personal life was predictable, unexciting, and perfectly fulfilling, thank you very much.
Enter Frank Langdon, agent of chaos.

Summary
"Significant pulmonary contusion and multiple rib fractures, and there's very likely a subdural hematoma in there too,” Garcia says grimly, sounding like she's citing it to herself rather than to anyone else in the room. “We’re lucky it's most probably small, but given her fluctuating GCS it still concerns me quite a bit. Also, besides the shard of metal, the bruising and swelling along her abdomen suggests the possibility of internal bleeding as well, but we need to get in the OR to fully evaluate the severity of it."
“Jesus King,” he murmurs. “You were supposed to have the day off.”
or: there's a car accident on mel's day off. she ends up at the pitt anyways.

Summary
They were friends.
And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.
It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.
It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.
