Summary
Recalling that picture once again, Sonic felt himself feeling something akin to mourning.
No; this isn’t who Shadow is.
He had seen the black hedgehog at his best through a mere picture, and he was nothing like the one standing before Sonic just a few seconds ago, thirst for revenge so strong he was losing sight of who he was, stuck in a fog he couldn’t find the exit of without his guiding light.
As much as Sonic wanted to help him through the fog, the marble turned blackhole was quick to be the center of all of his attention.
He can do this.
He’ll help Shadow - because that’s what heroes do.
He’ll help Shadow smile again.
or the hedgehogs’ perspectives in the Sonic 3 Movie, and how they found their way back to each other in the end. (lines and dialogues from Sonic 3 are included in this work; do NOT read if you don’t want to be spoiled.)
additionally: 5 times Shadow was in the process of recovering his lost memories and 1 time he recovered them all.

His second, though, was of Blue, of kindness and laughter and souls singing in harmony, until one was just gone.

Shadow doesn't know Sonic's name, but feels obligated to find his family and apologize to them for letting him die. Shadow is unaware that Sonic is very much not dead. It takes far too long to figure this out.

Sleep doesn’t come easily. Sure, it’s been a year since Sonic’s life has changed for the better and he’s become considerably more comfortable with his living space. That doesn’t mean he’s really use to it yet.
