Summary
Thorin never came to Bilbo in his dreams, though he wasn't sure if he would have welcomed the sight. His choice to remain in Erebor haunted Bilbo enough in his waking hours, much less their last conversation - hardly a conversation at all. The look in Thorin's eyes still made Bilbo shudder. It wasn't fear he felt - it was something more sinister. Burgeoning horror, perhaps, at the anticipation of things to come.
It was the same as the parapet, where Thorin had held Bilbo over that edge - that liquid, manic clarity that made it terribly clear this wasn't over.
Perhaps it was the not knowing that so paralyzed Bilbo, filled his days with malaise and his nights with bloody dreams - the inscrutable visions of coming tragedy he'd seen reflected in Thorin's unfocused eyes. Perhaps it was the grief at what might have been.
But, perhaps it wasn't. Perhaps this was just how adventure changed you.
