It's the reason behind so many forms of art, the key factor that seemed to drive everyone forward.

Love appeared to be in the center of everything and yet, Yeon Sieun couldn't find it in him to acknowledge or truly believe in it.
Just like godly entities or ghosts, it was something he needed to see in order to believe, something so common that he somehow had never truly experienced.

An odd pair. That's all Juntae could describe them as from afar.

And then, out of nowhere, Park Humin and Go Hyuntak became Baku and Tak-ah.
Then Juntae was allowed to take peaks at their intruiging personalities from up close.

He got glimpses of rumours he would've never guessed were true, of pained stories and irreversible injuries.
He quickly learnt that it wasn't their honor they had been trying to protect everytime they had picked up a fight. It was simply each other.

He got to see them in more private settings, at the safety of their homes, where the bickering quieted down significantly and their bodies just moved around each other's like a choreography they had long grown used to.
They were good at coexisting, so good that it made more wonder and awe bloom in Juntae's chest.

Up close they ended up being a lot different than what they showed to the world.

Park Humin and Go Hyuntak through Juntae's eyes, from the day he first noticed them until the day he saw them for the last time.

"Gogo."

Hyuntak, shamefully, almost flinched at the sudden call of his name, at the raspy voice that broke the silence for the first time in hours.

Humin was speaking again before he could even hum in acknowledgement.
"Can you come with me tomorrow?" the where was left unsaid, though he still sounded unsure, almost ashamed to ask.

And once again Hyuntak's blood momentarily boiled with anger at the fact that Humin even felt the need to ask, at the fact that it hadn't been taken for granted.
He had never let Humin go through anything on his own, he had stood guard between him and his guilt even during times where he himself could barely stand, so why would he do it now of all times?
How dare Park Humin even try to picture himself standing alone at the funeral of an old friend?

"Of course, dumbass.", mumbled Hyuntak instead of letting his frustration and worry lash out in the form of unjustified rage.

Hyuntak is waiting for Humin to shatter and grieve while Humin is waiting for permission to do so.

"I would never expect you to get along with someone like him." , he remembered telling Sieun within the second month of being awake, after having witnessed his interactions with a joyful and extroverted person such as Park Humin.
The entirely too different boy who had managed to make Yeon Sieun not only tolerate him, but adore him as well.

" It feels natural.", Sieun had replied casually after rolling his eyes,
" Maybe it's because I see myself in him."

Suho reeled back at that, appalled by the unexpected confession that he couldn't even pretend he agreed with.
" You do?"

A hum, melodic and filled with awe.
" It's odd. Like looking in a mirror."

And Suho had been confused at the time, slightly conflicted between childish jealousy and pride, but he suddenly understood it.
It had unknowingly been the best way to describe what hed been feeling ever since Go Hyuntak had stepped in the room. A mirror, shattered in a different way with cracks that didnt quite overlap with his own, but a mirror nonetheless.

"I think Sieunie hates my guts."

"Where is this coming from?"

"Everything I do to get closer to him ends up being wrong." a quiet mumble, more for himself rather than the other boy.
"He gives me some weird looks sometimes."

And for a split second he swore he saw a realisation flash by Humin's eyes, understanding and a hint of pity.

"It's Yeon Sieun. He gives everyone weird looks, you're not special.", Humin chuckled, letting the previous look completely dissolve behind playfulness, as though it had never been there.

"I don't mean those looks.", Hyuntak's grin fell shortly,
"Sometimes he looks at me like you did after everything happened.", he confessed vaguely, while motioning his hand around and nodding his head downwards, more specifically towards his knee.

Humin didn't say a word.
He barely even moved, opting to simply pull his hand away and tilt his head down.

He knew. He had noticed too.

Everyone knows Baku will come when Gotak is in trouble. It’s practically Newton’s 4th Law at this point: if Gotak is here, Baku will come chasing. Or vice versa, but nobody’s ever tried getting to Go Hyuntak through Baku. That’d just be inviting suicide.
Gotak, though? That’s an easy target. Squirming bait that you catch from the shallow end and impale on your hook to bring in the real catch. It’s common knowledge now, but this wasn’t always the case.
Things weren’t always like this. Baku didn’t always used to be the protector, and Gotak wasn’t always so sensitive about Baku’s reputation. So when did it start? Why did they change? What happened during the winter break of their first year in middle school?
