A sweep, then Pete feints, and as Izzy reaches after him with his sword the novice pirate trips him. Izzy stumbles backward, hits the deck-
And there he is, blade to Izzy’s throat, and Izzy’s proud and hot all over when the man has the nerve to smirk at him from across the weapon.
“Not to be cliche, but…” Pete murmurs, and then his blade moves. He uses it to tilt Izzy’s chin up so they’re looking at one another properly, and Izzy knows he’s done for. He knows how wide and dark his eyes must be as they meet Pete’s.

One of the crew spots the dinghy first and calls it out, and the others rush to the railing. By the time it draws up to the ship, Lucius is sobbing openly, and even Jim looks stricken. Oluwande and Pete clamber aboard. Izzy is vaguely aware of Oluwande throwing himself at Jim. He’s too busy watching Lucius grab Pete and pull him to him, wrapping his arms tightly around him. Lucius’s body shakes with sobs. They both pull away to look at each other, as if they can’t believe the other is real, then wrap themselves around each other again.
Izzy’s throat burns. His chest feels tight. His head pounds. Jim and Oluwande dash down the ladder, heading for the cabin they once shared. Pete and Lucius follow. Izzy doesn’t know where they’re going. He doesn’t care.
He doesn’t care.

Izzy’s breath is coming fast, nostrils flared. Lucius has always talked back like this, has turned every word Izzy uttered back on him as a sharpened weapon, his words cutting deep as any blade, and Izzy has no way to parry or block them.
Lucius cocks his head, his gaze dropping to Izzy’s collar. “Looks like your captain isn’t too pleased with you tonight though.”
