A shared interest in the arcane and a few throwaway fucks was one thing, had mutual benefit, but the sort of secondhand suffering that curled around Essek’s ribcage and currently crippled his ability to speak was the symptom of something else entirely.
Caleb tilted his head to the side, lifting his chin just enough to glance sideways at the drow. The low flame of the torch sconces dispersed just enough dull light through the room to play cruelly over ghost-pale skin and scabbed-over gashes like claw marks so deep that multicolor bruises radiated around them. Divine healing magic only did so much when there wasn’t enough to go around.
During the Mighty Nein’s future in Rosohna, it takes one too many close calls for Essek to separate the political from the personal, and to realize just how personal his relationship with the party’s wizard had become.Bookmarked by widocast

It's been awhile since Caleb has had a large disassociative episode, and unsurprisingly, it's still not easy to deal with. The Mighty Nein have had experience bringing him back to the present, but there's still no cure all for a wounded mind.

Everyone looked to the wizard, concern graven in each face differently. Jester clearly felt guilt, surely thinking if only about some spell or another being available to her. Nott reached for her flask before remembering she'd given it to Jester for safekeeping while she worked on her alcoholism. Fjord had a dark look on his face as he took in their situation, ever pragmatic. Caduceus seemed calculating in a way that wasn't typical of him. Beau reflected he hadn't seen this as much as the rest of them. Caleb had been getting better.

Caleb, four years old and bright-eyed, nods as he helps his mother dust a little bit of sugar over the plain cakes she has baked for midsummer. They don’t always have enough, but when they have anything to spare, it goes to the stille Luete. Simple cakes, dishes of cream, little dolls made of straw that dangle like effigies over the fireplace - when they have enough good wood for kindling.
“But be careful not to ask too much,” she cautions. “If a favor is large, the fae can be fickle with their power. Gold turns to straw and the like, I’ve told you that story, haven’t I?”
“Ja, Mutti,” Caleb says cheerfully. “I can be careful.”

Healing potions, a full night’s sleep, all their spells – rather than no potions, a night out drinking, and half Pike’s heavenly light spent on easing all of their hangovers.
(In which Vox Machina is rather overconfident in their manticore-slaying abilities, and Vax pays the price for it.)
