“I’m okay, Jungwon-ah. Go to sleep.” Jay murmurs, gently nudging the younger one’s body back onto the bed so he wouldn’t completely tip over.
But Jungwon grabs his wrist mid-motion.
“What are you–”
“Let me hold your hand, hyung.”
Jay pauses, like he’s trying to decipher if Jungwon’s actually being serious. But there’s a flush on his face that makes Jay realize he’s being dead serious.
“We can pretend I’m still drunk or something.”

“This is war.” Jay groans quietly, physically feeling his lifespan shorten because of the way his heart can’t seem to slow down its pacing.

Summary
Desire. That’s the one thing that never dies.
Omitted truths are easier than outright lies. Jungwon tells himself he’s protecting Jongseong by staying away, starving himself until his pulse is a ghost of what it used to be. He stays home, survives on store-bought vegan substitutes, and ignores the way his fangs ache every time he remembers the heat of Jongseong’s skin.
But when a new predator starts circling the only person who makes him feel alive, Jungwon realizes that his “noble” distance has only left Jongseong unguarded. He’s forced to decide what’s worse: being the monster who claims him, or the saint who lets him be taken.

Jungwon moves to pull out the axe and Jay's eyes rake over him. The serenity isn't an affectation. There's a slight tremor in his legs but it must be adrenaline more than anything else. His face is cool, relaxed. There's nothing in his face to indicate he's scared or apprehensive. He looks perfectly in his element.
Not for the first time, Jay gets the sense that he and Jungwon are two worlds apart. What is new is the sense of danger.

Jungwon learns two things, as the days pass.
First, the universe is a bitch, and second, his brain is remarkably stupid.
See, the kitchen incident must’ve triggered some sort of cosmic chain of events—that’s the universe equals bitch part—because after it, his Jay-hyung just gets more and more competent. Or, not exactly. Jungwon’s pretty sure Jay is just as competent as he always was, only now, and this is where Jungwon’s stupid brain comes in, now Jungwon is so keenly aware of it that it’s like fucking enlightenment.
Except, his enlightenment consists solely of seeing everything Park Jongseong can do, and how he just keeps fucking doing it.
Otherwise known as: a quiet day in the kitchen sheds new light on Park Jongseong’s capabilities.
Jungwon’s not going to make it out of this alive.

Jungwon feels hot - both because of his flushed cheeks and because of the sudden panic in his veins. He’s pretty sure he feels the same…right? He likes being with Jay; he loves it more than anything. Jay makes him happy. Jay makes him feel safe and loved. Jay is always there for him, through the good and bad. And looking back at how ecstatic he felt whenever he was with the latter, maybe Jungwon realizes that he wants to do more than just hold hands, lean on his shoulder or hug his arm. Maybe he wants to kiss him and go on silly little dates. Maybe he wants to say “I like you too”.
But his brain was screaming “ABORT MISSION!” again and again.
His brain was whispering doubt and fear, telling him that one wrong move and it’s not just a relationship that would be ending, but also their so-very precious friendship.
And Jungwon couldn’t have that, never. His friendship with Jay was the most important thing in his life. How could he risk losing that over romance?

Since then, he’s had the face of the monster, of the vampire, who murdered his parents right in front of him ingrained forever in his brain. Jay swore that one day when he’s old enough, when he’s strong enough, he’d track down the one who killed them. After all these years he can finally settle the score with the one who stole his innocence.
