Summary
A week before he was set to go to Vermont, Buck did in fact find out.
He woke up to the giant groupchat—composed of the 118, their spouses, and the kids old enough to have phones—going crazy with a random flurry of pictures, all sent by different people. A winter coat here, a sled there, snow boots and gloves and scarves and plane tickets—Wait. Plane tickets?
Then, a text with actual words.
Christopher: cancel ur air bnb buck. we found something better.

Summary
Over the past month, Buck had… changed. It was subtle. His senses were suddenly dialed to eleven—he could hear and smell much more than he should've been able to, and he could even see better at night, somehow. It hadn't all come on at once, each improved sense had just kind of crept up on him in the days and weeks following the bite. Which still looked weird. It had fully healed and became just a scar within a day and a half, but it wasn't like any of the other scars Buck carried. It looked almost silvery, and he felt like he could still pick out each individual toothmark, detailed in a way that made it look more tattoo-like than scar-like. Buck's sudden super-healing hadn't stopped with the not-dog but supposedly not-wolf bite. Every minor scrape and bruise would heal and disappear about three times faster than they used to. It was eerie, honestly.

Summary
"Donuts," Jee repeated insistently, sliding off the couch. Her giraffe was clutched in one hand now. "Please." She looked up at him with those big brown eyes and that little pout that was definitely a Buckley trait. Then she went for the kill. "Pretty please, Uncle Eddie?" Fucking Buckleys.
"Sure," Eddie agreed with a sigh. Buck hadn't brought a car seat for her, but luckily there was a place within walking distance. It was like a twenty minute walk, but that would probably be fine. It at least would kill a good chunk of time. Which was good, because Eddie had no clue how to entertain a toddler. "It's a bit of a walk, though. That okay?"
Jee nodded eagerly, bouncing lightly on her toes. "I like walks." Eddie absently wondered if being puppy-esque was also a Buckley trait or if the toddler had just been spending too much time with her uncle Buck.

Summary
Buck stumbled to the side, not even trying to move his injured arm yet as he used his other to rip off his helmet and mask. His hair was stuck to his forehead, damp with sweat, so he was quick to push his curls back. It was hard to focus on anything other than the fact that his shoulder currently felt like molten lava, but he glanced around the scene to make sure everyone else was out okay as the building started to give up completely. They were. Evidently, he had been the last one out.
"You alright, Buck?" Eddie asked, his sudden appearance at Buck's side startling him just slightly.
"You got a sixth sense or something?" Buck shot back with a grin that he couldn't help. His playful tone just earned him an eye roll.

Summary
That shut Ravi up, but Buck gave Eddie a scowl. "I am not off my game. Picking up extra shifts doesn't mean I'm not sleeping."
He hadn't been sleeping, but none of them needed to know that. He just couldn't bear the nightmares. Every time he fell asleep, he was right back at that lab, watching his loved ones die. It wasn't always Bobby, sometimes it was one of the others on the 118. Sometimes it was even more irrational, with Maddie or Christopher behind that glass. It was only when he passed out from sheer exhaustion that his subconscious stopped torturing him.
"I think he said that because of those bags under your eyes, Buckaroo," Hen said, tone a little more gentle than it usually would be. "You do look pretty tired."

Summary
"I have had worse," Eddie acknowledged. "I just…" His lips twitched in a wry grin that somehow just made Buck more nervous. "I had a dream the other night, one where I died on shift. Some people would take that as a sign."
"You don't believe in signs," Buck countered, feeling like his ribs were about to crack from the sheer effort of holding in his panic. He felt claustrophobic suddenly. He needed them both out of this fucking wreckage, needed Eddie to stop talking like this.
"You told me once that the universe was screaming at me." Eddie opened his eyes, tilting his head a little to look at Buck. There was something so achingly intense mixed with the pain in those brown eyes that Buck loved.

Summary
Eddie resisted the urge to huff like a pouty child. "I'm telling you Hen, something is off with that guy. I don't trust him."
Hen's expression softened from amused to sympathetic and a little sad. "Buck seems happy," she murmured gently, and Eddie's shoulders slumped. "I'm sure that hurts, but we both know he deserves it."
"Of course he does," Eddie retorted, sounding a little too defensive even to his own ears. "I just…" But he didn't have anything to say, because he didn't really have any reason to dislike Callan. It was just a gut feeling, but no one else seemed to be feeling the same way. Eddie knew his family well enough to be able to tell if anyone was feeling off, but they were all welcoming the man in and laughing at his (stupid) jokes while Buck looked at him like he hung the damn moon.

Summary
Despite that, everyone seemed to be settling into this new normal like things were going to be okay.
They weren't. They couldn't be.
Buck sighed softly through his nose and swallowed another mouthful of the shitty vodka, pulling a face at the taste. He didn't care, though. The goal wasn't to have a good time, the goal was to shut his mind up and be able to sleep without dreaming. Sleep had been unbearable since the lab. Some nights, it was nightmares and losing Bobby all over again, or the entire team. But worse were the good dreams, the memories of his found family before it was broken.
Almost three months ago, he'd gone for drinks after a shift with Ravi to celebrate a good save. That night was the first decent sleep he'd had in a long time. No dreams. Plus, those few hours of being drunk had felt good in a way not much else had lately. Over time, the habit of just a couple shots to get to sleep had progressed to Buck getting fairly drunk a few days a week.

Summary
As he walked past the closed bathroom door, he heard something. The very distinct sound of somebody puking their guts up.
Shit.
Buck knocked on the door. "Chris? That you?" he called quietly, reaching for the knob and finding it unlocked. "I'm coming in." He paused just long enough for the kid to protest if need be, and then walked into the bathroom.
Christopher was on the ground in front of the toilet, which had the lid and seat pushed up so he could lean over it, his arms on the rim to hold his slumped form up. He looked like he had just rolled out of bed, which Buck realized he probably had considering the time. His pajamas were rumpled and his hair a mess, starting to get damp with sweat. He barely looked over his shoulder as Buck came in before he had to turn back to the toilet to throw up again.

Summary
"Buck? I thought you were on shift," Eddie said by way of greeting, cradling his phone between his shoulder and his ear as he went back to folding his laundry to pack. He had a flight to catch later, after all, both he and Chris did.
"H-Hey, Eds," Buck breathed, and it… Something wasn't right. He didn't sound right. "I, uh, I am on shift, I just…"
Eddie froze, a half-folded pair of jeans in his hands. His brain didn't seem to be working, just one thought running on repeat. Something was wrong. "Buck—"
"It's—I'm fine," Buck interrupted automatically. He was lying, Eddie knew it. Could tell by his voice, could feel it in his bones.

Summary
Icy fear mixed with burning rage and Eddie spit in Richard's face. "Stay away from my family," he snarled, struggling in his bonds like a trapped wild animal.
Richard's fist snapped out and connected with Eddie's nose with a sickening crack. Pain exploded through Eddie's face and he couldn't help but cry out, blinking the automatic tears from his eyes.
"Then tell me where mine is," Richard demanded, wiping the spit from his cheek. Gone was any enjoyment he had been taking in this. Now, his fury was tripled and plain not just in his eyes, but also on his face.
"They're not your family, they were your victims," Eddie said lowly, tasting the blood that was leaking from his nose.

Summary
Buck didn't recognize the car, so at first he just carried on like normal. The car was pretty badly damaged, but Buck was able to reach through the broken window to check the driver's pulse. It was weak, but steady. He leaned his head in slightly to check the backseat, and it was suddenly like all of the air had been sucked out of his lungs. He hardly noticed the second kid, the one behind the driver's seat.
He was too busy staring with mounting horror at the familiar kid on the passenger side. Not just any kid—his kid.
"Chris!" Buck's voice didn't even sound like his own, almost shrill in his terror. Christopher didn't even stir, but Buck's keen eyes registered that his chest was rising and falling—he was breathing. Still breathing, even if Buck felt like he couldn't.

Summary
His mind was swimming, drunkenly drifting from thought to thought. Though, at the current moment, he really only had one thought. Eddie.
Eddie had shown up, even though it was late—well, early now, according to the clock on the dash.
Buck shifted as he heard the driver's side door open, and he opened his eyes as Eddie shoved a plastic bag into his hands.
"Do not puke in my car," Eddie said sternly as he buckled his seatbelt. "I don't want to drive with that smell all day tomorrow."
Eddie how shown up tonight, but he was leaving. Soon. Today.

Summary
"Out of it, kind of," Buck admitted. "They must have me on the good stuff. There's still-" His gaze finally flicked to his leg as he got ready to mention the pain that he could feel, even if only distantly. But the words died in his throat.
His legs were under the white hospital blanket that covered him from the chest down, but something was visibly wrong. His right leg looked normal, he could visually trace the outline from his thigh to his knee to his calf and all the way down to his foot. But his left leg… His eyes darted to the top of his thigh and traced down, like if he started over it could change what he saw. But it didn't.
A little under his left knee, it just… stopped. There seemed to be nothing under the blanket, and it just lay over the hospital bed, flat and uninterrupted. Distantly, Buck could hear the beeping of his heart monitor pick up as he tried to force his brain to work, to make sense of what he was seeing.

Summary
It had been a little over six weeks since he had had his first shift back. At first, he'd tried to act normal. He had already texted everyone how sorry he was in the old 118 group chat, though not a one of them had replied. When he'd walked into the loft at the start of that first shift, he'd given a smile and greeting that were no more than shadows of his usual bright personality due to nerves. The response had been curt, disinterested, like he was just some stranger. Nobody was outright mean. They were civil and professional, but that was almost worse.
Buck would've preferred they yelled at him, told him how much they hated him. He would've rather gone through a million and one versions of his argument with Eddie in the grocery store.
Instead, it was like they didn't care at all.
OR
Buck is suffering as the 118 ices him out after the lawsuit, and he's forced to try and cope with the fact that the little family he had found didn't seem to care about him anymore. But when he gets injured and Eddie finds out, he learns the truth.

It didn’t feel like it was anymore. Which was how he ended up here.
