“Before you leave,” Adam corrected, pointedly, annoyed that he was still wearing his sweaty running clothes. He should be done with his shower by now, but the imposition of Ronan’s half-naked presence in his apartment had once again thrown off his entire routine. “You were supposed to be gone already.”or: most of the time, ronan takes his crucifix off when they have sex. sometimes, he doesn't. sometimes, adam thinks he might be ready for a relationship. most of the time, he doesn’t.

Two weeks before he’d packed his life into a suitcase and gotten on the first bus to Nowheresville, Adam had stopped returning his therapist’s phone calls. We should work on your emotional avoidance, his therapist had said, and then Adam had started avoiding him, which was poetry in motion, in Adam’s opinion. It was the funniest possible thing he could have done in response to that topic being broached. Adam didn’t suffer with all the grandiosity and aplomb of a saint actively being martyred in a public square; even though he sometimes wished that privilege might be afforded to him. Just once, Adam would like to make a big deal about something. He would like to do whatever the Adam Parrish equivalent was to slitting his wrists or blowing part of his inheritance on a fishing boat just to piss someone else off.

Adam Parrish learned, at a very early age, to never trust a rodeo boy. They were self-entitled pricks that thought they were better than the lowly commoners of the rural South, and would take what they wanted without asking. Usually while leaving a string of broken hearts behind them.
Adam was adamant that he would not become one of those broken hearts.
But somehow Ronan Lynch is different. He, at his essence, cares. It's not a bad thing that he seems to openly hate the other rodeo boys, either, with the only exception being eclectically wonderous Gansey.
It starts off with a kiss.
A kiss that leads to a hook up.
Which leads to another hook up.
And another.
And Adam thinks he can let himself have this - Ronan's body and his bite - with nothing else. No strings attached. Friends with benefits, with more 'benefit' than 'friend'.
But nothing's ever that simple, is it?
