    “Oh god Mr. Stark,” Peter blurted out as soon as he climbed in, not seeing the Avengers in his panic. He pulled off his mask and stared at Tony with wide eyes. “Mr. Stark I’ve been traumatized."

     

    The team was just having a normal night where absolutely nothing happened and everything was fine. That is, they were, until Queens's own Peter Parker burst through the window with a dilemma. A very awkward dilemma.

    He's never going to be able to look May and Happy in the eyes ever again.

    Peter’s voice came out strained, almost squeaky. “Well I was patrolling like usual and I was heading back to the apartment a solid ten minutes before curfew like a good and responsible vigilante and…” He crossed his arms, shifting awkwardly. “It was date night and I know they were trying to be quiet but… I think they forgot I have enhanced senses.”

    The gears were visibly turning in Tony’s head as his jaw dropped in realization. All at once, he burst into raucous laughter, doubling over off the couch. Natasha and Clint had figured out the situation as well, the former of which was pressing her lips together to prevent her amusement and the latter making no such effort to hide his glee. Pepper was even biting back giggles.

    “Mr. Stark! This is so not funny; it was very traumatizing!” protested the red-clad vigilante as the other Avengers looked on in confusion.

    Furrowing his brows, Steve asked, “What happened?”

    His laughter finally dying down, Tony said, “Oh god, I’m so sorry kiddo but you have to admit it’s hilarious. The kid’s aunt was having sex and forgot his hearing was good enough to hear a car start from three blocks away.”

    Okay, technically, Spider-Man got Captain Freaking America's number, but that's besides the point. What is the point is that Captain Freaking America called Spider-Man, not realizing that the masked vigilante was actually a high school student, and now he was forced to answer in front of his entire seventh period history class, including but not limited to his best friend, his school bully, and a very disbelieving teacher.

    Peter took the hand, smiling awkwardly. “Do all of the Avengers know who I am now?”

    “Sorry kid,” piped up Tony. “They got weirdly protective when they found out their little Spider-Baby was being bullied. If I didn’t tell them Natasha probably would have tracked your phone to your apartment.”

    Peter grimaced and felt a chill run down his back.

    Abe takes a couple seconds to compose himself. To sort out all of these thoughts while a couple of cops move onto the scene and start poking and prodding at Peanuts’ dead body. And the verdict is, when he’s done thinking, that he’s okay after it all, somehow.

    That he’s okay, and that when school resumes next month, he’s going to have a newfound, immense respect for his classmate that reaches far beyond academics. One he should have had long ago, but will continue to have for forever. Because right now, Peter Parker seems to Abe like the strongest goddamn person on the planet. The strongest, and maybe even the best.

    Abe glances up at the polluted sky, smiles, and wakes up the next morning only half-scared out of his mind.

    It's progress.
