    Phantylia really hadn’t been kidding when she’d compared this lawyer to an attack dog.

    The lawsuit took place in Adlivun, and members of his team complained that they WOULD have handled it just fine, had a lawyer from Amphoreus not been part of the prosecution and systematically torn the defence to pieces. Hence, Phantylia’s attack dog comparison. Nanook had found it amusing at the time. Some guy in a suit might be aggressive in a debate, but put him in a real confrontation without “courtroom etiquette” to hide behind, and the lawyer would prove to be all bark. Now, the CEO was considering the possibility that courtroom etiquette was there to protect other people from him.

    Nanook couldn’t help but wonder, had he shown up for the trial back then, if things would have turned out differently.

    …Probably not.

    Phainon did the only thing possible in such a situation: He panicked.

    “Uh,” he said, because clearly his eloquence had abandoned him during one of the cycles, “yes?”

    // OR, circumstance leads to the heirs thinking Phainon only lived through thirty-three cycles. Rather than correcting them on this, Phainon doubles down and decides this is the new narrative he'll go along with so as to avoid worrying them too much.

    PAIMON DIGGING HIMSELF INTO A DEEPER HOLE WITH EVERY NEW CHAPTER

    When he didn’t say anything, Stelle put a hand on his shoulder and said, “Phainon.”

    “Stelle,” Phainon said.

    “I want to study your stupidity like a bug.”

    Yeah, Phainon wasn’t really sure what that meant. All he knew was that he was very tired and Stelle was displeased about his understatement. Typically when Stelle thought something was a stupid idea, it meant that it was very stupid indeed.

    “I didn’t set out with the intent to lie,” Phainon said, slowly. “It just happened. I panicked.”

    From the curve of Hyacine’s brows, she was probably wondering how exactly she could’ve gone on to miss any changes to the bone structure of his back and shoulders. There had clearly been no wings.

    “I put them away,” Phainon said. When the two women continued to look at him, waiting for some explanation on what, exactly, that meant, the words were snatched from his throat. “They’re kind of… folded away inside of a synthetic black hole so I don’t always have to walk around with them out?”

    Stunned, Hyacine said, “You store your wings inside of a collapsed star?”

    He stored a lot of things within a collapsed star. Mostly the black tide monsters and titankin that had gotten in the way during his many cycles. They were all space dust now.

    Phainon said, “Where else am I supposed to store them?”

    Their disbelief was palpable. That was fair; It was a pretty odd use for a black hole. Most of the universe tended to avoid them - they didn’t tend to harness them as their own personal storage for unwanted limbs.

    “...I… Alright.” Hyacine pinched the bridge of her nose again. This time, the pinch left little indents in her skin. “Sure.” A minor pause. “Show me.”

    “The black hole…?”

    “No, Phainon,” she said, exasperated, “show me what’s left of your wings.”

    The 33 cycles is over! Its now 33,000! It improved! (Or gotten worse, depending on who you asked)

    Also, Anaxa finally realizing the weight of theory vs practice. Like yeah, theres no way its only 300+ coreflames, Anaxa is not that dumb to fall for that lie! But then it sinks in what it means to have way more than that, that feeling when dread finally sinks in along with the realization of the implications now that he has to speak the words into existence. Phainon has gone through at least 10,000+ cycles. (theyre in for a shocker)”

    THE WAY MY BRAIN EXPLODED AT THIS NEW PERSPECTIVE, completely changed how i read that chapter

    While Castorice had not known what she was looking at, Cyrene had known from a single glance. There weren’t many people who could alter time like this within Amphoreus. The answer of ‘this must’ve been Phainon’s doing’ wasn’t hard to settle on. Knowing Mydei and Anaxa, they had likely pushed too far and this was the result.

    And that was when Cyrene had realised that things hadn’t just gone a little wrong, a momentary dispute or argument bubbling over, but that something very bad had happened. More extreme. Less overfilling a cup with water and spilling the remains, and more… shattering said glass under the weight of a waterfall.

    Because… Trianne’s open infinity gate did not open the way that it should have.

    “Yes,” Cyrene said. Tears spilled from her eyes, finally, no longer able to contain them. “It’s real.”

    Phainon’s fingers twitched by his sides. He reached a hand up and wiped them away with his thumb. He murmured, “Why are you crying?”

    “Because you aren’t,” she said. “Because you won’t.” She paused, her lips wobbling. “It’s real. I promise this is real. We made it. Our plan worked.”

    He wiped away more tears. Then, he pulled Cyrene back into his arms and held her while she cried all of the tears that he could not.

    “I believe you,” he murmured.

    He didn’t know whether he was telling the truth or not.

    As far as he knew, Phainon had always been satisfied with him. While the prince does not normally indulge in words of praise, he secretly enjoys it whenever an utterly fucked-out Phainon would start blabbering about how good Mydei made him feel, and how it feels as though their bodies were made for each other.

     

    So never, never in his wildest dreams could Mydei have ever imagined that there would come a day when he'd be feeling insecure over some weird mechanical contraption, one that Phainon has seemingly turned to for ‘relief’ after they've been apart for far too long than both of them are used to.
