Summary
When a benefit gala for the Irina Foundation drags the worst year of Ilya Rozanov’s life back into the light, he spirals hard and fast. Ilya decides Shane deserves a life that is not built around carrying him. Shane decides Ilya cannot get better with him standing in the doorway of every room, being another thing his husband has to deal with.
So they sign the papers. Not because they want to end their marriage, but because each of them would rather be the one left behind than the reason the other keeps drowning.
Or: Just before Shane is supposed to file the divorce paperwork, he finally says the one thing he should have said from the start, and they discover that love does not have to leave to be kind.
