Summary
The sound, when it came from Blake, seemed almost to shake the very earth beneath them. The air had been silent, with only the occasional burst of birdsong. The birds fell silent then as if cowed. It was a horse and a wordless cry, Blake’s throat sounded raw with grief as he let out a long cry that seemed to linger until the breath had completely left Blake’s body.
Will found himself hardly able to stand it. How long had it been since he had allowed himself to feel anything? He couldn’t say. All he knew was that to feel Blake shaking in his arms in mourning for his brother was making his typical stoicism harder to maintain. Myriad images of fallen comrades flashes before his eyes. The senselessness of it all. The eternal, intolerable brutal nature of the violence. So many boys and men were taken from the world for no good reason - Joseph Blake was but one of these, but if Will was only able to mourn for one, he was glad to pick Blake’s brother.
