Work Text:

”A-are you sure this is a good idea, Wei-xiong?” Nie Huaisang inquired as the four men walked through the forest towards the meadow the lantern ceremony at the end of their Gusu Lan days would be held. Wei Ying only turned his head back, and smiled at him.

”This means it isn’t,” Jiang Cheng translated, and Wei Ying gasped, offended.

Hearing that, Wen Ning gulped a bit. He really didn’t want to get in trouble. Seeing his friend’s worried reaction, Wei Ying draped an arm over the anxious boy’s shoulder. Wen Ning blinked up at him with such reverence that it scared the other two.

”Don’t worry about anything, Wen-xiong,” Wei Ying said, smiling at him brightly. ”Have I caused you trouble ever in the past?”

”I hope it was a rhetorical question!” Jiang Cheng said, and Nie Huaisang nodded beside him. Wei Ying only rolled his eyes. Those two were such bullies! He had no idea why they were friends in the first place!

”I-If you say so, Wei-gongzi,” Wen Ning mumbled, blushing lightly.

”That’s they spirit!” Wei Ying praised, patting him on the shoulder. Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes. That boy looked at his brother as if he was some kind of deity – it was both annoying and adorable at the same time.

After a few more minutes of walking, they reached the meadow. There, Wei Ying let go of Wen Ning, walked up to a tree with a big rot, and took out several paper kites and art supplies.

”What the fuck?!” Jiang Cheng asked, staring at the things in his brother’s arms. ”How did you get those?” He asked, and Wei Ying smiled at him brightly.

”I may or may not mentioned to Zewu-Jun that having some fun would help us relieve the stress, so we would concentrate better after we return to the class,” Wei Ying said, smile still on his face. ”He gave me the supplies, so I could do the kites for us.” Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes once again with a snort. This is Wei Wuxian and his famous convincing ability for you!

The four boys walked out to the middle of the meadow, and sat down. Wei Ying put down the kites in the middle of the circle and each of them took one in their laps, as well as some drawing supplies.

After ten minutes of work, Jiang Cheng glanced at Nie Huaisang who was working beside him. On his fan, there were a group of little birds – really well drawn. Jiang Cheng felt his lips opening in awe, and when he looked up, he found himself face to face with Nie Huaisang’s questioning eyes.

”Fuck!” Jiang Cheng swore as he leaned back with alarming speed. ”Sorry,” he mumbled, feeling his cheeks heating up a bit. Nie Huaisang giggled, covering his mouth with the sleeve of his white robe.

”It’s okay, Jiang-xiong!” He said reassuringly, then leaned closer to see Jiang Cheng’s kite. ”That is a pretty lotus you are having there,” he said, nodding towards the pink/purple flower on Jiang Cheng’s kite. The other man blushed, and mumbled a small thanks.

”Awe, don’t be so shy, Jiang Cheng!” Wei Ying teased his brother, and Jiang Cheng felt his blood boil.

”Uh W-Wei-gongzi? H-how do you draw this properly?” Wen Ning asked, pointing at something on his own kite. When Jiang Cheng squinted at him, the shy boy sent him a small wink with a smile. He noted that he had to thank Wen Ning later.

After they had finished their drawings, the four of them stood up, and lifted their kites up, so the wind could catch them. As it did, Jiang Cheng cloud have a better look to all of their drawings.

The younger Wen sibling had a drawing of all of their faces on his kite with the word ’my friends’ below it. Jiang Cheng felt his heart warming. He decided that they would definitely spend more time with the boy later.

His won younger brother had two hugging bunnies on his own kite, to which he smiled up with content. Jiang Cheng had no idea since when Wei Wuxian had held the animals so dear to his heart, but had to admit that the bunnies were adorable.

And last, but not least his own crush had a beautifully drawn scenery of the meadow on his kite. The meadow was full of flowers, and Jiang Cheng could see the form of the four of them working on their kites. There were even birds flying above them!

He felt his heartbeat speed up. Nie Huaisang was a really remarkable person to him after all.
