Chapter Text
You have been in a coma for two weeks wasn’t what Korra had expected when she woke up from a battle in a too-bright hospital room.
“What?”
“You’ve been in coma,” Lin repeats patiently beside her, “for two weeks.”
Her head felt like it was an overheated oven, running as slow as a slug. “Two weeks…?”
“Yes, Korra.”
“What—how?” Korra jerks up, only to be restrained by the cables all over her body. She winces at how sore everything felt almost immediately. “Shit. Shit.”
“Relax,” Lin says softly, easing her back into the bed. “You’re okay. Your body just needed to heal without you pushing yourself every minute.”
“Yeah, but—how’s everything? How’s—” Asami. Her eyes widened. “Where’s Asami?”
“She’s outside. Haven’t left an inch from her place since you got here, that stubborn girl—would you like to see her?”
“Yes,” Korra said, then promptly changed her mind. “I meant—no, no not now , shit, Lin—”
“It’s perfectly normal for you to be confused right now,” Lin places a hand on her shoulder gently. “Just breathe.”
“I—something’s wrong,” her head throbs. It felt like she was going to throw up.
“That’s okay,” Lin nods, “tell me what’s wrong.”
“I—I don’t know,” The constant beeping of the monitor beside her pushes her to the edge of panicking. “I don’t know, Lin, something’s wrong with me and Asami but I don’t remember—”
“Korra. Korra, it’s okay, just breathe. Breathe.”
She does. One breath, two breaths—the tension in her body starts to relax little by little. She collapses back on the bed, closing her eyes to soothe the throbbing. “Something’s wrong.”
“Was it a fight?” Lin suggests. “Asami mentioned something about one, I think.”
“You’re—you’re right. It was a fight, but I forgot why— is she angry?” Korra asks. “With me? Do you think she’s still angry?”
“Hey. Hey, calm down.” Lin says softly. “I think she’s more worried to death about you rather than angry.”
“I’m terrible,” she buries her face into her palms. “Fuck, Lin, I’m terrible.”
“You’re not.”
“I am. I am.”
“Fighting with your loved ones doesn’t make you a terrible person, Korra,” Lin squeezes her shoulder gently. “It just… happens. Trust me, I’m married.”
Korra lets out a small laugh. “You really like using the ‘ I’m married’ line in every conversation, don’t you?”
Lin smiles. “It took me a long while to get there, so, yes. I do.”
“Okay, but have you left Kya to be in a coma when you two aren’t on the best terms?”
“Well… not quite,” She shrugs, “but it wasn’t your fault that you’re in a coma, Korra. You can’t control that, and Asami knows.”
“Still. She’s probably angry at me.”
“Maybe.”
“And worried.”
“She is. And nothing is going to get better if you keep sulking here and not do anything about it,” Lin tells her. “So it’s either you go back to rest, or that you get up and let me tell Asami that you’re awake.”
Korra bites on her lip for a moment before saying, “Okay. Bring her in.”
And then she wakes up.
What the fuck…?
There’s beeping in her side, then her lungs expanding without her permission. Korra shot her eyes open in panic.
What the fuck was that? What the fuck—
Murky conversations start coming into her ear little by little.
“—hit, shit, she’s awake—can anyone hold her?”
“—I’ve got her, I’ve got her—”
A cold hand cups her cheek gently. “Hey. Hey, Korra.”
She tries to grab on the hand—the cables prevented her from doing so. Asami, she tries to call for her. Asami. I’m sorry.
“Hey, hey it’s okay—” there’s a wet feeling in her cheeks, and the hands moving to wipe her tears off her gently. “It’s okay. You’re going to be okay.”
I’m sorry, she kept mouthing. I’m sorry.
“I know you’re scared, but you’re going to be okay.”
Asami, I’m sorry. Korra wished she had the energy to say more. I'm sorry I forgot to tell you that I love you.
Asami smiles softly. “Oh, Korra. I’m sorry, too.” Her hand moved down her arm to hold hers and squeezed them tightly.
Korra tried her best to squeeze back.
“Just… next time, can you not go into a fight and fall into a coma to prove a point?”
Korra smiles.
Asami smiles back.
“I love you.”
I love you, too.
