Merlin and Arthur are unable to leave each other's sides without going through immense pain. Merlin is forced to move into Arthur's room. He begins to experience visions that become more and more frequent which eventually leads them to the cave he'd been seeing. They get trapped inside and due to Merlins immortality he is able to cut off flesh from his skin and give it to Arthur to eat. Due to blood loss and starvation, Merlin dies repeatedly. The knights finally come to the rescue and there is a road to recovery. Arthur and Gwen want a night alone, thus Merlin must sleep in the next door room, still they both experience some discomfort. During this time Merlin has another vision, this time in the far future; Him all alone, struggling with the loss of everyone he loves. He panics, both Arthur and Gwen run in to see what's wrong. Some time later, Arthur's death inevitably comes to pass and Merlin essentially becomes a vegetable. He doesn't move or respond, he lays in bed all day and is basically shut off. Having the ability to mute all his senses, he locks himself in his mind, until he starts to hear Arthur in his thoughts. He knows it's truly Arthur and not his own imagination. He wakes up from his 'sleep' quickly telling Gwen that Arthur is with him. Gwen is relieved that Merlin is out of his 'coma,' yet only becomes more worried and overcome with tears when he goes off about what Arthur said. She tries to convince him it's what he wants to believe, she thinks he's lost it. Neither she or Gaius listens to him. Gaius really believes he's 'gone mad' with all his pent up grief and issues. He loses faith in them and runs away. Three years later he returns because of warnings from Arthur that Gaius is dying. The physician passes away from old age and Merlin sticks around this time. Over centuries he loses more and more of himself, ending up in a mental hospital, being experimented on, hiding away... Arthur finally comes back and after 'saving the people' he returns to Avalon, taking Merlin with him this time. Melancholy ending.
