Summary
After Arthur tells Merlin that he's planning to ask for Gwen's hand in marriage, Merlin... kinda falls apart. The stress of hiding his magic, hiding his identity as Emrys, dealing with the duties of a servant and a physician's apprentice, as well as struggling under thee weight of his failures (Morgana, Mordred, Kilgharrah, Arthur, there's so much) has gotten to him. So Merlin decides to leave Camelot for a bit, to either put himself back together or find himself.
Enter Gwaine.
The dashing knight who has been loyal towards Merlin and the Crown (but mostly Merlin), sees an opportunity to find his way into Merlin's heart where Arthur is making an opening. Merlin's just happy to have a friend to talk to, even if he's still keeping secrets.
Lucky for both of them, their journey out of Camelot and throughout Albion provides them the chance to understand each other and their roles in fate's play. And when their bond is put to the test, the best of fate's results becomes reality.
