David isn’t good at dancing, but the loud shoes are cool. All he remembers is shuffle ball change. Shuffle ball change on the stairs. Shuffle ball change in the hallway. Shuffle ball change on Alexis’s fingers.
Adelina moves the wailing toddler to her lap and grabs at David with her free hand.
“She shouldn’t be—”
“Shush, it’s almost your turn. Put on your jacket.”
David is good at fancy clothes. Matching them, looking handsome, staying clean. He runs his fingers over the velvet lapel. Wearing the nice clothes makes him braver, stronger, a better rememberer. Shuffle ball change shuffle step.
