Sonic didn't know if he could call himself a morning person -he absolutely knew, he couldn't-, he just liked his bed a little too much to leave so soon! But he also loved those mornings when he could do just that, stay in bed, enjoying the comforts of his own sheets and pillows. Just getting lost in his own drowsy world.
He sighed as he hid his face in his pillow for a second, a small smile settling on his face as he pulled his covers a bit higher, now covering a bit above his shoulders, shielding himself from the slight cold of the autumn morning, protecting his body in the warmth of his bed.
There was nothing that could beat this.
Or maybe, there was something. He did admit that experience would be a million times better if a certain hedgehog-alien hybrid was there with him…
Ah, Shadow. What a guy. He and Sonic weren't officially dating -yet-, however, they were slowly getting there. They knew they had feelings for each other, however, apparently both of them agreed that it was better to just let things flow naturally. Sonic couldn't help but smile when he thought of the dark hedgehog, of his cute eyes, and his cute ears, and his cute nose, and his cute cheeks, and his cute lips, and his cute fangs, and just his cute face in general! He still remembered the last time they went out together, they had held hands for the first time and Sonic still felt butterflies just thinking about it! The idea of them walking around, holding hands was such a nice image to think about, and the blue hedgehog couldn't get enough.
And right as he was thinking about how nice it would be to have Shadow next to him right at that moment, a certain black and red hedgehog appeared out of nothing in front of him, laying on his bed.
Both hedgehogs looked at each other in surprise for a second, before both sat up, scooting away from each other as their faces turned red -and green- in embarrassment, Sonic backing away enough to fall off his bed.
"Sh-Shadow?" Was the first thing Sonic said, instead of paying attention to his fall.
"Are you okay?" Shadow asked instead, and it seemed like only then Sonic was realizing that he was no longer in bed.
“Oh-Uhm.” Sonic muttered as he sat up on the floor, instead now kneeling next to the bed, looking at Shadow with wide, confused eyes. "Yeah, I'm fine- Uh- Why…? Why are you here?" He asked, and the hybrid's blush immediately became even stronger.
"Uhm, I'm not sure." Shadow answered quietly as he looked around the room, as if lost. "I'll go now." He then added as he got up from the bed, however, Sonic quickly stood up.
"Don't!" He exclaimed, but he soon noticed just how desperate he sounded, so he dropped his raised hands back to his sides and smiled in embarrassment. "I mean- You're already here and all…" He said quietly, and when Shadow seemed interested in hearing what he had to say, he continued. "Would you like to have breakfast? I'm sure that we can pull out something good together." He offered as he scratched the back of his neck.
Shadow considered it for a moment, and finally, nodded with his head, making Sonic's smile widen and become more genuine.
"Great! Uhm-" Sonic said before exiting the room. "I'm happy you're here, by the way." He mumbled, a bit embarrassed to admit it, however, the way Shadow became very clearly flustered was totally worth it.
"I am happy as well." Shadow muttered quickly before saying "Let's go now." And walking out of the room. Sonic chuckled softly as he followed the other hedgehog.
When they got to the kitchen, Sonic immediately started looking around, trying to find something to make. He and Tails would usually just have cereal and milk, or if they were feeling fancy, tea and toast, but now Shadow was here, and Sonic had to impress him! Because he just had to. What did Shadow like? He wondered as he went around his kitchen, well aware of Shadow's eyes on him. He knew the hybrid ate straight coffee beans, which was weird, but endearing in a way? If he really thought about it, Shadow had a really weird taste with food. He didn't have a problem with burnt food, or even raw! If he ever made a sandwich, it could be two slices of bread with practically anything in between! Sonic once saw him eating an 'orange sandwich', which consisted of sliced orange, with the peel, in between the bread, so maybe Sonic didn't have to worry about making good food at all! Shadow could eat just about anything! But what if he liked weird food? What if he made him an incredible meal but Shadow didn't like it because he had such a weird taste in food and-
"Here they are!" He exclaimed once he found a bag of coffee beans. Tails sometimes drank coffee, specifically when he had been working on a project for a long time, which, thanks to Sonic's unmatched big brother skills, didn't happen often. "Hope you enjoy it." The blue hero said as he handed his not-boyfriend the bag.
Shadow looked down at the bag in his hands in silence as Sonic watched the green blush take over his face curiously.
Sonic remembered this? Shadow had never even mentioned it! It was actually Rouge, making fun of him for eating coffee beans for breakfast, making him only then realize that it was a weird habit that no one else had. And Sonic remembered? Oh, chaos, why was he so touched by this? He felt a little stupid.
"Thank you." He muttered quietly, but quickly brought a handful of beans to his mouth. "What will you have?" He asked.
"Oh! Just cereal and milk." Sonic shrugged as he grabbed a yellow bowl and put the cereal in, because cereal went first, then the milk.
The blue hedgehog sat down next to the hybrid in silence as they both ate their breakfast, silently stealing secret glances at each other, sometimes their eyes finding each other and quickly looking away, blushing.
That is, until they heard steps approaching and a yawn to accompany. "Wha- Oh, hey Shadow." Tails said as he entered the kitchen. Both hedgehogs turned around to look at him. "I didn't know you spent the night here." The kid said casually, as if the idea of Sonic and Shadow sharing a bed wasn't amusing in the slightest.
"I didn't." The dark hedgehog said quietly, and the fox looked at him with a raised eyebrow as he poured milk in another bowl, very similar to Sonic's, but blue. "I teleported here, by accident." Shadow explained, however, that last part came out a bit more quiet because of how embarrassed he was of this fact.
"By accident? How did that happen?" Tails questioned, clearly interested in whatever explanation that situation may have. In fact, maybe too interested for how early it was. However, Shadow simply shrugged as he avoided eye contact.
"He really scared me! I was just laying on my bed and he appeared out of nowhere!" Sonic said as he laughed. Tails chuckled softly, simply finding funny how loud his brother was laughing.
"That was your own fault, hedgehog. You didn't pay attention." Shadow commented now more confidently. He was never as confident as he was when making fun of Sonic.
The blue hedgehog faked offense as he brought a hand up to his chest. "You could've saved me!" He exclaimed, and Shadow looked up as in thought before simply shrugging.
"Wouldn't be as funny." The hybrid stated, and Tails chuckled lightly as Sonic gasped.
Breakfast went by fast, because as they say, time flies when you're having fun. None of the two hedgehogs noticed how much time had passed by, at least until Shadow got a message from Rouge, asking where he was, and that was the signal that it was probably time to leave, so, with a goodbye that was probably much longer than needed, Shadow left Sonic and Tails' house behind.
The blue hedgehog sighed content as he turned away from the door, finding Tails looking at him with half lidded eyes and a raised eyebrow.
"What?" Sonic asked, a light blush creeping through his cheeks.
Tails smiled smugly as he shook his head. "Oh, nothing." He said, then leaving the room to Chaos knows where.
Sonic was just happy that he got to spend a little time with Shadow! Could you blame him? Being with Shadow always made him happy, even if it was a one-time accident…
Or at least he thought it would only happen once.
A couple of days later, the two hedgehogs had actually agreed on meeting each other in Sonic's house, this because Shadow apparently hadn't seen a movie that the other boy had qualified as a 'classic', so now it was mandatory for him to come to Sonic's house and watch said movie with him.
Sonic was just getting finished tidying up the living room, and preparing everything for Shadow to get there. He had made sure to bring his softest pillows and warmest blanket to the couch, intentionally bringing just one blanket because just in case they both got cold, they would have to snuggle close together and share. If you asked him, Sonic only blushed lightly at the thought, and totally didn't giggle.
He also had some snacks ready on the table, some chips, some other sweet treats, Shadow's favorite coffee beans -which he totally didn't ask Rouge the name of-. Of course, popcorn was missing, but that was because Shadow had offered to bring it, and so those were the only things left: the popcorn and the movie partner.
They had agreed to meet at four pm, and as Sonic looked up at the clock, he found that there were still twenty minutes left, and Shadow was extremely punctual, so he would still have to wait another twenty minutes.
He sighed as he let himself fall on the couch. He grabbed one of his pillows, and hugged it as he impatiently waited for the twenty minutes to go by.
And for a second he thought they may have gone way faster than he thought, because soon enough a familiar flash of light appeared in the living room, soon revealing Shadow, standing there dumbfounded, popcorn in hand.
"Shads, you're here!" Sonic happily exclaimed as he stood up from the couch, looking up at the clock once again. "And you're early. Were you that excited to watch the movie?" He asked, lightly blushing at the idea that Shadow might've been excited to see him, actually.
And it might've been true, because Shadow blushed too.
"Uhm- I suppose so." He muttered as he was quickly hugged by Sonic. "I need to go back though."
"What, why?"
The hybrid looked down at the popcorn packet he had in hand. "I didn't get to pay for this."
Sonic frowned in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"I was about to pay, but teleported here." The dark hedgehog explained, and the other hummed.
"Oh, did you teleport by accident again?" Shadow nodded with his head. "Well, go pay for it, I'll be right here!" Sonic smiled widely.
Shadow returned it with a small smile of his own as he nodded and disappeared for a couple of seconds.
Sonic stood there, just dealing with that fuzzy warm feeling Shadow always left him with, until that same hedgehog appeared once again in front of him.
"Done." He announced, and Sonic chuckled lightly.
"Hi again." He waved a hand. "Have you been teleporting by accident a lot?"
Shadow shook his head. "This is only the second time."
Sonic blushed lightly as he remembered the first time. "Huh, weird." The other hedgehog hummed in agreement. "Well, let's leave that for later, now we have a movie to watch!" He exclaimed, taking the popcorn from Shadow's hands. "I'll go put these in the microwave." He announced.
That movie session of course ended up with them watching more than just one movie, in fact, both of them ended up losing count, and hadn't even noticed how long they had been there, or when they ended up cuddling together under the only blanket there. So you could say that their little movie watching session was successful.
However, the accidental teleporting remained a mystery for both hedgehogs, as Shadow kept suddenly appearing in front of Sonic with apparently no explanation. It apparently only happened with Sonic as well, because when the hero would mention anything regarding the situation to his friends, they would all be equally confused, not having seen Shadow teleport on accident ever.
Shadow appeared early in the morning and late at night, sometimes Sonic would be in the kitchen and suddenly his almost boyfriend would step out of his room with a lost look in his eyes. Another time the blue hedgehog would be laying on the couch and Shadow suddenly was sitting next to him, legs crossed and hands intertwined and resting in his lap.
Sonic sat up as he smiled at the other hedgehog. "Hey, Shads." He said with a bit of humor in his voice.
Shadow gave a short nod as an answer as he looked around nervously. "I have to go."
"Whaaat? So soon?" The blue hedgehog pouted. The hybrid once again nodded with his head.
"I was in a GUN meeting." He explained, and Sonic could've almost laughed at the mental image of the hedgehog just disappearing in the middle of a meeting, however, he was too focused on the other's worried expression to find it funny.
The blue hedgehog, instead, appeared disappointed by this news. Shadow sighed and stepped closer to him, shyly grabbing his hand. "I can come back when it's over, if you'd like." He offered.
Sonic gave a small smile before he nodded with his head. "I'll be waiting."
Shadow hummed softly before he gave a quick kiss to Sonic's cheek and teleported away, leaving a stunned and flustered blue mess behind.
The hybrid got back to Sonic's house a little over an hour later, telling how Rouge and Omega made fun of him for suddenly disappearing and how Towers asked a million questions about this 'accidental teleporting'. They had a nice evening after that, in fact so nice, that it got Sonic thinking.
He started thinking of a few things, however, all connected to Shadow. About how pretty he was and about how much he enjoyed spending time with him. About how titles wouldn't change a thing about their dynamic and how their relationship worked, but how nice it would be to call it an official thing for them.
And so those thoughts drove him to stand in front of the bathroom mirror, making eye contact with his reflection as he thought over his word choice.
"Hey Shadow?" He called as he smiled nervously at the mirror. "I have something I want to ask you…" He held the smile for a second or two, to then drop it as he sighed and brought a hand down his face.
The hedgehog then took a deep breath and tried again. "Hey, Shads! Wanna be my boyfriend?-No." He quickly interrupted himself as he rolled his eyes at the way his own voice sounded. "That's stupid." He then muttered, to then look back to his reflection.
"Just do it, Sonic!" He exclaimed as he got closer to the mirror and pressed a finger against it. "Just ask him." He sighed once again. "Do you want to be my boyfriend?" He whispered, and then took a step back, filled with determination, he closed his eyes and tried to sound as natural as he could.
"Shadow, would you like to be my boyfriend?"
And when he opened his eyes and found the mirror in front of him, he not only saw himself, but also, standing behind him, a wide eyed and green faced Shadow.
Sonic quickly turned around as he felt his face heat up. "Shadow!"
The hybrid simply stared wordlessly, cheeks furious green. "When did you get here?" The blue hedgehog asked, the other, however, didn't answer, instead, he simply looked down and teleported away. "Wait, no, no, no-!" But it was already too late.
Sonic groaned in embarrassment as he covered his face with both hands. Shadow really had to teleport in at the worst time possible. He had to explain himself! If only the hybrid didn't hate emotional confrontation.
Whatever, he had to do something! Even if he came to discover that Shadow didn't actually want to date him, because that's the impression he had after the hybrid immediately teleported away without a word. Still, he needed to know for sure! Maybe because he just wanted to torture himself, but maybe not.
He ran off the house, telling Tails that he'll be back later, and he went directly to Team Dark's shared apartment. He sighed before knocking.
He was a bit disappointed when he saw that Rouge was the one to open the door, he didn't know why, though, because of course Shadow wouldn't. He very rarely opened the door.
"Took you long enough." Rouge said as she looked Sonic up and down.
"I need to talk to Shadow."
The bat chuckled. "I know." She then took a step aside, revealing Omega, standing in the living room, looking intently at the front door where the hedgehog was standing. "But we also need to talk to you first."
Sonic sighed as he imagined the different million ways the bat and the robot could get rid of him, and nodded with his head.
Rouge let him step in and made him sit down on the couch, her sitting on the loveseat right across from him, while Omega stood next to her seat.
"Okay." The woman said as she crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. "What happened?"
"WE WILL KNOW IF YOU ATTEMPT TO LIE." Omega then added, glowing red eyes burning through Sonic's face.
"Well." The hedgehog started saying, nervously fidgeting with his fingers. "He's been teleporting accidentally lately." Rouge nodded with her head, aware of the fact. "So he teleported right as I was…" He blushed. "I-uhm… I wanted to ask him to be my boyfriend."
Rouge kept silent for a second, then looking up at Omega and giving a short nod with her head. She then looked back at Sonic and smiled mischievously. "You're adorable, blue." She said, and then giggled. "You both are, actually."
She then sighed. "We know why Shadow's been teleporting on accident."
"Really? Is there a way to help?"
The bat smiled once again. "Maybe." She shrugged.
"STOP WITH THE MYSTERY." Omega interfered. "SHADOW TELEPORTS BECAUSE HE WANTS TO BE WITH YOU."
Sonic felt his face heat up. "What?"
Rouge laughed loudly when she saw his face. As she laughed, the robot explained. "HIS TELEPORTATION WORKS IN A WAY IN WHICH HE PICTURES WHEREVER WANTS GO TO IN HIS HEAD AND THEN TRIGGERS HIS CHAOS ENERGY."
"Bahaha! He keeps teleporting by accident when he's thinking about you!" Rouge simply continued to laugh as Sonic's face only turned redder.
"Did Shadow know this?" Rouge nodded with her head. "Oh…"
"Can I go talk to him now?" The blue hedgehog asked, and the robot took a step to the side, pointing Sonic to the hallway. He already knew which door was Shadow's room.
He knocked on the door. He heard a few doubting steps, and then the door opened, revealing a still green faced hybrid.
"Hey, Shads." Sonic smiled shyly. The dark hedgehog looked off to the side. "Can I get in?"
Shadow took a second to step aside and open the door for the other young hedgehog. Once they were both inside, the door closed once again.
Both hedgehogs stood in silence for a second, Shadow leaning against the door, and Sonic in the middle of the room.
Shadow looked up at the other, and the blue hero smiled.
"I'm sorry." The hybrid spoke softly. "I'll try not to teleport again."
"What? No, no." Sonic quickly said. "I like hanging out with you, Shads."
"But I-" Shadow pressed his lips together. "I heard something I shouldn't have."
Both blushed as they looked down to the floor.
"I mean-kind of." Sonic shrugged. "I was planning on asking you, so…"
Shadow hummed.
They stayed in silence for a few seconds, both looking for a way to proceed with their conversation. However, before any of them could say another word, Shadow blinked out of his place, then appearing right in front of Sonic.
The hybrid's eyes widened in surprise as his face turned furious green. Sonic, on the other hand, smiled widely as he remembered what Rouge and Omega told him.
"I wanted to be with you too." He admitted as he blushed lightly.
"They told you?" Shadow asked quietly, and when Sonic nodded with his head, he looked down in shame.
"What do you say, then?"
"Huh?"
The blue hedgehog took a quick breath in before smiling widely and extending a hand out, leaving his palm facing up. "Do you want to be my boyfriend?"
Neither of them thought it would be possible for the hybrid's face to turn into an even more vivid shade of green than before, but soon enough they were both proven wrong as Shadow stared wide eyed at the other's hand. His red eyes quickly darted up to meet Sonic's greens, and after a second, he cleared his throat, looking away from an instant before letting his hand hover over Sonic's, taking a moment to think over his answer, even when the blue hedgehog already had an idea of what he was going to say.
"I would like that, yes." Shadow finally said as he let his hand land on top of the other's, a firm and confident tone of voice that he very obviously wouldn't have been able to muster had he not taken a moment before speaking.
Sonic intertwined his fingers as he chuckled. "Always so formal, Shads." He said in a joking manner.
"How should I say it, then?" Shadow raised an eyebrow. "Hell yeah?"
The blue hedgehog laughed, easily recognizing that as a joke. "You know, I wasn't actually asking you to change the way you speak." He said with a small smile adorning his face. "I think it's cute." He then shyly admitted.
Shadow gave a small smile, one of those that made Sonic almost melt in his place. "Well, I would expect my boyfriend to think as such." The hybrid then shrugged.
Sonic couldn't hold back the wide smile that made its way into his face as he heard that. He laughed as he jumped to hug his new boyfriend, quickly getting hugged back.
That didn't fix the problem though. Not quite. It was more like, it simply wasn't a problem anymore. Now, everytime Shadow suddenly appeared next to Sonic, both would simply laugh it off, and, if neither of them were busy at the moment, simply take the opportunity to hang out together.
Of course Shadow made the effort for it to stop happening, because sometimes it did create a problem, and it got close to that, only happening once in a while. However, to be completely honest, he secretly wished it could happen more often, because everytime he was welcomed by a wide toothy grin and a warm hug from his boyfriend.
