    Simon feels his heart thumping in his ears.

    "You wanted... tae quit... me?" he says slowly, grappling with the implication. Renton's problem with quitting heroin was that he loved it too much.

    "Ah did." Renton's calm facade cracks, and now he looks genuinely uncomfortable.
