To Capture Pieces

Summary:

Bruce Wayne was dead. "Batman" was still around--that's how Tim Drake knew that something had gone truly, spectacularly wrong. Then - even worse - the rampage of Red Robin. Tim's Robin, his hero, murdering dozens. His plan didn't really have steps beyond (1) Get to Robin and (2) Convince Him to Stop. But somehow, against all the odds, it worked.

That was meant to be the end of the story. Tim, delivering a repentant Jason Todd to a grateful family and then returning to his previous life, watching them from afar. But, the Bats were far more broken than he expected. Stopping Red Robin was only the beginning.

A continuation of the Batkid ending of Death in the Family (2020)

Notes:

For anyone who hasn't seen the movie, TLDR. Bruce dies in Bosnia to save Jason, and Jason returns to Gotham. Already struggling with the relationship between justice and violence, Jason's grief drives him towards becoming an assassin, and the public begins calling him Red Robin due to his rampage across Gotham's criminal underbelly.

If you want to see the Batkid ending, see here.

I am drawing from the movie, obviously, but I also draw from both comics and fandom for characterization.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

The coin shone as it flipped in the air, both sides glimmering brilliant silver.  It was beautiful, in a way, and Tim would’ve wanted to take a picture of it if he’d had his camera.

But he hadn’t carried his camera since Batman died.  Since Robin became Red Robin.

And now Robin’s fate was tied to the coin.  Two-Face was smirking as he watched it flip, hand held out to catch it once it finally fell.  Tim’s heart was frozen in his chest, his fingers clenching tightly around Red Robin’s taser that had skittered across the floor just moments earlier.  His pocket was heavy with the other tool of Red Robin’s that had been kicked away, the very thought of it, of all of this, was bile burning Tim’s throat.

An almost audible sigh of relief exited everyone’s lips suddenly—Tim didn’t even need to see it to confirm.  Two-Face held the coin up regardless, the unscarred half shining like a small silver moon.

Two-Face’s grin widened, his smile stretching grotesquely across the burned half of his face, “Fate wants me to do some good today.  I’ll start by saving Gotham City from the mass murderer…Red Robin!”

Tim couldn’t breathe, his fingers gripping the taser, white-knuckled.  No.

“Your verdict—guilty!”

Tim moved without thinking, darting out from behind the sign he had been crouched behind, running soundlessly over the tiles.  Robin was going to die.

Two-Face’s gun was pointed at Robin, leaving his back a wide target for Tim.

“My judgment—dea—”

White-blue electricity from the taser danced over Two-Face’s torso, zapping down the rest of his body.  Red Robin’s taser was strong, but not strong enough to kill, luckily.  Two-Face crumpled to the ground, unconscious, but alive.

Tim’s heart was beating in his ears.  He couldn’t believe he had just done that, but—but he had to.  If he didn’t, Robin would’ve died!  He—

Red Robin stood, his expression filled with the same cold mercilessness that Tim saw in his nightmares.  He was pointing his remaining gun, the one that hadn’t been kicked across the room, at Two-Face’s prone body.  He was going to kill him.

“Burn in Hell, Two-Face,” Red Robin sneered.  Tim’s mind went blank with horror.

Tim reached into his pocket and pulled out Red Robin’s second gun.
