Legolas looked on, a little confused as Gimli and the hobbits rolled a ball of snow across the pavilion of the White Tree. If they didn’t stop soon it would be wider and taller than two of them combined.

“Legolas!” Pippin spotted him and waved frantically, almost toppling over as his laughing compatriots continued to push. “Come help us!”

“You look like you have it well in hand.” Legolas said, emerging from the doorway.

“We’re building a snowhobbit, or maybe a snowdwarrow.” Pippin said, skipping over to meet Legolas. “We’re going to need help putting a torso and a head on him.”

“A what?” Legolas asked, looking at the snowball with new eyes. They had stopped pushing it at the very tip of the pavilion overlooking the city and had started to roll another one.

“A snowhobbit!” Pippin repeated. “Do elves not do this?”

“Not in the Greenwood,” Legolas reflected, “though I suppose it might require more unused open space than we have.”

“We sometimes do it on training fields,” Gimli said as they wandered closer, “inconveniencing people is sometimes part of building snowdwarrow.”

“Maybe we should go to the Greenwood and build your father some snowelves!” Merry suggested cheerfully.

“Perhaps.” Legolas allowed, unsure that the antics of four hobbits and a dwarf would go over well in his father’s court.

Legolas helped them lift the second and third snowballs into place, Sam and Gimli his main assistants, as Pippin and Merry devolved into a snowball fight, something Legolas was familiar with, and Frodo went to get hot drinks, extra clothing, and for some reason, a carrot.

He had thought that the extra clothing was for the hobbits, but as it turned out, it went on the snowbeing, with pebbles for eyes and a mouth, and the carrot for a nose. Gimli sacrificed a pipe to the effort, lifting Frodo to stand on his shoulders to arrange the face and clothes.

When it was finally done, they all stood and gazed upon their creation, standing proudly over Minas Tirith.

“Good job laddie.” Gimli said, slapping Legolas on the back. “Your first snowdwarrow.”

“Or hobbit.” Pippin and Merry chorused.

There was a burst of laughter, and the six of them swung around to find Aragorn and Gandalf watching them from the doorway.

“A wonderful work of art.” Gandalf said blandly as Aragorn tried to stifle his laughter. “A snowwizard I assume?”
