When Twitter user @Lucy_Memphis97 pointed out the similar personalities of the professional Russian hockey player, Ilya Rozanov, and Miya Atsumu, the setter for the professional Japanese men’s volleyball team: The MSBY Black Jackals, she could have hardly foreseen what her small joke would become. Both men would go on to dominate the trending page for the next couple of weeks (Much to the annoyance of fans just trying to get updates on their favorite teams.). While normally one would expect something like this to blow over in a week or so, the acknowledgment of this joke from both players seems to have fanned this flame past the point of return.
But as the fire has continued to rage what started as a light-hearted joke appears to have become much more serious. In fact it seems that both players have started a rivalry of sorts with each other. It started at small with the players making light-hearted jabs at each other via social media but has since escalated to the players trashing each other in interviews. Here’s a translated version of what Miya had to say about this last week:
Interviewer: Miya recently it has become quite the joke online that you and professional hockey player, Ilya Rozanov, are extremely similar in both personality and play style. Any thoughts?
Miya: Well I don’t really see it. Especially in terms of playstyle I mean I play setter which requires you to think extremely strategically as you set up all the plays meaning your in charge of reading the other teams defense, while Rozanov plays hockey which requires you to think less strategically than someone trying to scrape gum off the bottom of someone's shoes.
Rozanov had this to say in response:
Interviewer: Have you seen the recent interview with Miya Atsumu? If so what’s your response
Rozanov: Miya is lot like small dog in cage. Yaps and growls non stop but would run away the moment you opened the cage to get to it. Is why he plays volleyball, too much of a coward to make chirps without net in between him and opponent.
All and all a lot of animosity towards eachother……
