POSSIBLE ALIEN MICROBES FOUND IN PETROVA LINE (CROSSPOST WITH r/aliens and r/specbio)
I'm…honestly in shock. I've spent so much of my life as a passionate sci-fi fan (currently working as a coordinator for ComicCon), and always wished that we would find aliens in my lifetime. I never imagined it could actually happen. We're not alone in the universe. I know this is an awful situation…but I can't help but feel a little excited. Anyone else?
u/MadlyFunctional · 32y
I know how you feel 100%.
u/briefadvert4 · 32y
I mean, we basically found algae. I guess it's cool that they exist, but the Fermi paradox is still definitely a consideration. The chances of finding this microbe were incredibly low already; even just speaking mathematically, the chances of finding large alien life, god forbid Intelligent alien life, is simply impossible. We all have to give up on our Star Trek dreams at some point in our lives.

Astrophage research compilation
Hi everybody, I'm a data coordinator at CSA (Canadian space agency, for the non-natives.) I've been given permission by the head of the Petrova Taskforce to share some data that we, NASA, Roscosmos, CNSA, ESA, JAXA, ISRO, and others have compiled. All of this is concerning what we've discovered about the microbes in the Petrova line (yes, they are microbes), as well as more information about the sun's dimming. We're hoping that, by getting more eyes on this, we can learn more. This is being crossposted to r/biology, r/astrophysics, r/space, r/statisticalanalysis, and other subs. You can submit any findings here. Thank you.
u/starzexaggeration670 · 30y
I'm a huge astronomy nerd, and I've been observing Luyten 726-8 (a local star) for nearly seven years now. I've noticed a very slight dimming pattern over those years – I always assumed it was my equipment, or a misreading of the data, but looking at the Sun's dimming chart…I see some similarities.

This is a great idea – plenty of us here on the sub are professionals – but super unconventional. I don't know if I've ever heard of a intergovernment agency providing data to the public like this.
u/SlimVindication · 30y
What exactly is the Petrova Taskforce? We hear it spoken about on the news, but I feel like all we know is just that it's "being created to deal with the problem."
u/absorbedrevelry199 · 30y
Bigger question: who's running it? I can't imagine that much power being invested into anybody. I get the sense that this "taskforce" nonsense is just some puff piece they're telling the public while they panic and try to figure out what the hell they're doing.
u/imagerylala [MOD] · 30y
[PINNED] Meet the head of the Petrova Taskforce: Eva Stratt
The UN just announced the name of who they've put in charge of the Petrova Taskforce. From ProPublica: "Eva Stratt, Dutch/German national, has a BA in history from the University of Heidelberg and a masters in communications from McGill University, where she learned English. She was a midlevel administrator at ESA and is now the organizer and administrator of the entire Petrova Taskforce and all of the projects/agencies contained within that umbrella. She has no active social media presence and little information about her is known." A former colleague went on record for The Telegraph saying: "Yeah, I get why they picked her."
I'm honestly not sure how to feel about this.
u/liminality · 30y
Hot take, but it's actually good we don't know much about her. If it was a public figure they would be subject to much more corporate/political sway and also could be affected by public opinion. Imagine if it was Elon Musk or something, LOL
u/Landry_Luncheon_3 · 30y
I worked with her briefly at ESA. This will not happen.u/liminality · 30y
Oh? What's she like? You imply she's unbiased…what else is there to her?u/Landry_Luncheon_3 · 30y
I think it's wrong of me to speak about someone who can't speak for herself. All I will say is that I have full confidence in her to accomplish this task. If there is anyone in the world who can direct this project it is her.u/liminality · 30y

Had a premonition last night about the petrova taskforce
hey guys, have to share this here. last night I had a premonition about the scope of the petrova problem. I realized that because astrophage are aliens, we need more aliens to stop the aliens. in this premonition, I met a struggling single mother at a gas station outside Waco. After closer inspection, it turned out that she was actually an amalgamation of amoeba that contained the answer to the petrova problem. she was in the shape of a person in order to deliver the message to me that only after we all come together will we defeat this evil. however she told me that in order to make pangea again, the ultimate goal for all entities on this earth, we must sacrifice one landmass. I asked her which one and she kissed me gently on both cheeks and floated up into the sky. she gave me a bikini kill tshirt, which I then put on. it looked like a crop top. it actually looked really good on me. I stared at myself in the bathroom mirror and wondered, "am I a woman?" I had previously shut down this part of myself but now realize that the astrophage are actually representative of the dissolving of the gender binary. in the future we will all be hermaphrodites and in order to begin this transition we must reconstitute pangea (which, in dividing the planet, creates divides of gender – we cannot have more than one sex if we only have one land to share) and begin consuming astrophage. just wanted to share with you guys, and if any of you are working on the project currently I would appreciate it if you could send this up the chain of command. of course I'm not expecting Eva Stratt or anything to see it, but I think it's really worth someone like Ryland Grace or Dmitri Komorov hearing. thanks.

u/wheezingwhale · 29y
Wow…this plan? Not so hot.
They have the perfect combination of smarts, resources, and community engagement but they still can't come up with a plan that's both safe and effective. It's not just incompetency– it's endangerment.
Here are a few ideas for how else to solve your problem:
-
Greenhouses – building giant, climate-controlled greenhouses would let farmers grow food even when the weather gets bad. No Sun? No problem. 😎
-
Heat Lamps – If every building were to recieve a heat lamp large enough to provide warmth equivalent to the Sun's rays, the problem could be stopped before it even begins. 🔥
-
Population Control – while controversial, methods such as sterilization and humane euthanization have worked in the past to control populations in the wake of tragedy. Thomas Malthus, one of the great English writers and economists, wrote extensively about this. It may be time to pick up his teachings! 🍎
Those are a few ideas on how to solve the Earth's cooling. Let me know if I can help you with any other questions! ✨

u/Skittles_Obsessed_1985_ · 27y
During my time in academia, I published a paper arguing that water wasn't necessary for life to evolve. The head of the project read the paper and recruited me, thinking that, because Astrophage lives on the surface of the sun, it probably wouldn't be a water based life form. (It was.)

Pretty much constantly is what I want to say, but the truth is that after four years of this, it becomes background noise to the present-day problems that come up. But I would say that everyone on the project is very aware of the circumstances even if it seems like they're having fun, like on Ilyukhina's Twitter. They released their statement. You can read it here. There was a massive explosion at the research center, the causes of which they haven't disclosed. Martin Dubois and Annie Shapiro were both killed in the blast. Ryland Grace, who was the unnannounced tertiary science specialist, will be going in their place. As for Dr. Grace, serving loyally on the project in an entirely different capacity for nearly five years and then sacrificing your life…he's a hero. There's no other way to put it.

Does he even have the training??? This is ridiculous
u/IdioticIndecency · 27y
they implied in the statement that he had always been the 3rd choice so I can only assume yes. not to mention he discovered like 50% of the stuff we know about astrophage.
u/phdpissoff · 27y
an absolutely incomprehensible tragedy. three brilliant minds, gone. The scientific community is reeling. I work at UCLA, where Dr. Grace went to grad school. We're holding a vigil for him tomorrow night. It just doesn't feel real.

BREAKING NEWS: BEATLE DATA CONNECTED TO EARTH, FIX FOR ASTROPHAGE DISCOVERED, PROJECT HAIL MARY OFFICIALLY A SUCCESS
Okay guys. I calmed down. You can read everything here. TLDR (although you should definitely read it all) is this: a predator to Astrophage, named Taumoeba, was discovered at a planet orbiting Tau Ceti (TC-E.) It will be released into the Petrova Line and we can expect the sun to return to full luminosity within 18 months. No info released about process or status of astronauts.
I have so so many questions, and according to my friend who works in SatCom, there's terabytes of information that haven't been disclosed and possibly never will be. But right now, I just can't stop crying. They did it. We did it.

Thank you for saying this. Not only is it irrelevant to this sub, RPF is ILLEGAL, UNETHICAL, and IMMORAL. Rocky is an ALIEN and unable to consent. It is tantamount to colonization and zoophilia, as well as being disrespectful to Dr Grace and his romantic partners on Earth. Dan and Phil did not come out for this.
