Freshman orientation had been so loud, the auditorium packed with bodies and overwhelming her with scents – body odour, cheap perfumes, nervous sweat, beer-breath (really, already? Mara had thought to herself, we haven’t even actually started college yet). But she’d expected to be overwhelmed. Her world for the past eighteen years had been Gram and the woods, learning to be a wolf; now she had to relearn how to be a human amongst humans.

Sam knew the flirting didn't mean anything, it was just how Mara was – Mara, tall and broad and probably able to bench-press Sam’s entire scrawny body. Mara, who walked him home from rehearsals each night so the townie guys wouldn’t harass the short trans college kid with the round baby face that would probably get him carded until he was forty. Mara, who’d taken one look at Sam when they were seated together during their freshman orientation and decided she’d minor in being his personal guard dog in between her premed lectures and once-a-month hunting trips out in the woods.

She has Mrs. Hudson who lives downstairs to not be the housekeeper, and Molly who's a doctor for dead people, and Uncle Mycroft who's the government, and Uncle Greg who brings cases. And they're the best family ever, even though Sherlock's the only one who agrees that Rosie should've been named for him.

Summary
