Work Text:
Thankfully wherever he parks, there's no chance of a piano falling on Kevin's car. Or anvil. Or a malfunctioning ACME 'Indestructo Steel Ball'.
"You did alright for yourself, Coyote!" Kevin says at first, glancing around the open-aired food tent. A stray, satisfied human customer or two eats. "This the grand opening, huh? Nice... I, uh, I thought you said you were only gonna plan for it AFTER you caught Road-Runner, but..."
In a silly, little, white chef's hat, Coyote innocently whistles. Those big, brown paws clutch onto a greasy spatula.
"But it's nice..."
Trailing off, Kevin folds his arms.
"Very nice...ly and conveniently placed in the middle of unused road," he says, squinting at the 'pavement'. "Was this illegally painted on?"
Coyote frantically waves to the (also newly painted) menu, to distract Kevin's lawyer-like senses.
"Great! I came hungry! What are you selling for lunch?" Kevin curiously glances this time at: 'AHHHH, SHADDUP!' GREEN CHILE TACOS, VAR-MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP GOURMET PALETA (LIMIT 1 PER CUSTOMER), 'RABBIT OR DUCK SEASON'ED ROLL, SUFFERING SUCCOTAS SWEET TEA...
Far off in the distance comes a large, misshapen dust-cloud...
Coyote's coyote-ears perk up.
"I do like the sound of that Fudd-ge Brownie Ice Cream Bowl you got," Kevin says idly, "it's not a New Mexico dish, but it is hot out here." He snorts, unaware of Coyote licking his chops. "You know what, I thought your ole pale Runner would come out and support you! Where is he—oh!"
Getting smacked in the face with a piece of paper, Kevin huff-laughs.
"Oh, so you did invite him then? With personalized invitation lettering? Fancy."
He decides to order a cactus juice-flavored Agua Fresca, getting smacked in the face again with a portable clear cup—with a clear lid—as the dust-cloud-thing from far, far away... it hurries over. Taking a detour from the nearby main stretch of road. Rattling everyone's vehicles.
"BEEP-BEEP!"
"Oh," Kevin coughs, waving the sandy red dust out of his face. And the gust of accelerated winds.
(Aaaaaaaand there goes the food-tent's ceiling, carried off...)
"BEEP!"
"Good to see you too, Runner. Is it just me or do you sound a little out of breath?"
Road-Runner ignores Kevin, still coughing up a fit, and stares unblinking at an outwardly gleeful Coyote panting and rubbing his big, brown paws together. Immediately, an odd-looking burger gets presented on a white ceramic plate. Held in both of Coyote's paws. To Road-Runner.
"Is... is that a stick?" Kevin asks, coughing less and watching as Road-Runner drops what is in his beak. "We can pay for food with sticks?"
He keeps watching between them, baffled, as Coyote's eyes round and protrude with surprise. His pupils warp into Road-Runner's blackened silhouette. "That's the replacement for your Road-Runner-Burger you planned to eat, huh?" Kevin says, chuckling. He eyes it. "The burger doesn't smell like cooked reptile meat... I'm a bit of an expert myself... it's gotta be quail. And using seeds as a seeded bun? Genius."
Road-Runner tilts his head, seeming to cheerfully inspect the plate.
He blinks.
He quickly pecks twice, three times into Coyote's offering, gulping audibly.
At the same time, Kevin grimaces when a bunch of drool hangs off of Coyote's sharp, exposed fangs. "Oh, oh, it's all a trap," Kevin realizes, muttering, rolling his eyes. "The 'restaurant' is a trap for your pal who helped in court. I get it. Can't just have a normal day, no..."
Coyote glares, raising a hand to 'cut' across his neck in a signal of shutting the other person up.
With a "plup!", Road-Runner jabs out a tongue teasingly.
"Beep beep!"
Even more quickly, he licks that tongue over Coyote's nose and runs away.
Oh...
"Oh, that's nice," Kevin says in acknowledgement, unable to read Coyote's expression and why his big, brown coyote nose droops dramatically. Nice to be friends. Or licking buddies. Or whatever is going on between these two. Paige has some speculations. Kevin isn't trying to hear it. Not from his adorable and grown-adult niece. "Alright! I still got time in my much break. How about we eat together like you said we were?"
