Summary
Everyone knows why Black Lake is called Black Lake.
At least, everyone thinks they do.
Then an eleven-year-old asks Hermione Granger a perfectly reasonable question: if the lake isn't actually black, why has everyone called it that for a thousand years?
Hermione intends to spend ten minutes confirming the obvious.
Instead, she finds missing history, an old warning no one bothered to explain, footprints that stop at the water's edge—and Bellatrix Black, very much alive, standing beside a lake she cannot remember but cannot seem to leave.
Bellatrix has forgotten something.
The lake has been waiting.
And Hermione Granger has never been particularly good at leaving an unanswered question alone.
