Chapter Text
“David.”
“David! I need you!”
David peeked his head through the open patio door at his mother.
“What? I’m attempting to watch this sauce so it doesn’t burn. What is it now? I told you it is too early for cocktails.”
“Hmmm and I still counter that you are wide of the mark. No, I was hoping you’d find a bit more shade for mommy so I can ensure Sylvia is adequately unencumbered by the fervor of the sun," Moira said, petting the long magenta and white wig she was wearing.
“And I told you that the patio umbrella is good enough. I’m going back to the stove.”
“Carry on if you must, my son the Saucier!”
David sighed, and returned to stir the pot, glancing out the kitchen window at his dad, Clint, and Patrick around the grill. It appeared as if Patrick was attempting to divert both fathers from meddling with his cooking. Somehow Clint and Johnny had bonded over knowing absolutely nothing about grilling yet still having very strong opinions on how it was done.
“And then I told him, ‘Donavan, I absolutely could never date a man who had quarantined in New Haven of all places.’ I mean could you imagine, Marcy? Ugh.”
David turned around to see his mother-in-law pressing her lips together in amusement as she looked over at him with wide eyes as she and Alexis entered the kitchen. He nearly felt horrified, but then just rolled his eyes at her and huffed out a laugh. She was getting used to his family’s ridiculousness.
Suddenly, he remembered that winter night months ago, when he and Patrick had talked in the dark. This, this was exactly what he had been homesick for during that time. This absurd bunch of weirdos that made up his family, now blended in with the pragmatic yet, also in their own way silly, Brewers.
Patrick walked in with the tray of food from the grill. He must have noticed something on David’s face because he sat it down and came over, hugging him close.
“I got them,” he said happily to his husband but with a hint of all that sadness from the time before. “They’re all here.”
Realization of what he was talking about dawned on Patrick's face. “Yep, all here,” he said with a smile as he turned to give David a kiss.
“Ew, David! Could you two, like, tone it down even for one minute!" Alexis exclaimed.
David had never been happier to say, “Swallow a screwdriver, Alexis!”
