Elementary My Dear Watson

Good quality mystery stories, high reader investment in discovering the truth.

A good mystery gives you clues but doesn’t explicitly explain everything for you step by step and hold your mental hand to drag you to the solution. Get in the dirt and do some digging. Work those mental muscles, soldier.

Or, alternately, it holds you hostage trapped behind a sound-proof one way mirror, forced to watch as well-written characters with conflicting goals/motivations slowly untangle the lies in a devious well-crafted plot while you have no way of helping them. The most satisfying kind of helplessness.
