A few days at a time when Patrick went camping with his buddies or the week-long vacation he took with Rachel after they graduated. They have received a single text message, the day after Patrick left without a word, the day after Rachel called and tearfully told them Patrick broke off the engagement and left only a (ridiculous) town name as clue of his whereabouts. “So.”
“So,” David echoes, not looking up from the paper, thoroughly engrossed in an article titled What Kenzo Left Behind. Patrick knows enough now to recognize “Kenzo” as the name of a fashion designer; five years practice removing designer clothing is finally rubbing off on him.
“So I ordered 40,000 bees yesterday.”
David’s entire upper body straightens at once, mouth set in a firm line echoing the sudden stiffness of his spine, brow impossibly flat. Admittedly, Patrick broke the news in this manner precisely to experience this full and honest reaction.
“What.”
“Honeybees. I ordered two packages.”
David blinks.
“What.”

Summary
David remembers thirteen. Thirteen turned him into a different person, too, and he’s not just talking about the nose job. Thirteen made him hyper-aware of everyone staring at him and everyone he thought was staring at him and everyone who could potentially one day be staring at him. So he gave them all a reason to stare. Thirteen was the year fashion became his armor. He looks over at the contour palettes, glitter, and false eyelashes spread out on the table next to them. Maybe Jayson’s looking for his own armor.
