Summary
The look in the Lord's eyes when he raised them to meet Oleander's was of a man deeply out of his element, and the manner he rose from his seat was absurdly polite, as if greeting an acquaintance of his own station.
"Pleasure, my Lord," Oleander said, folding his arm at his waist and bowing deeply.
"Your pleasure?" Bitterbrook murmured, his fingers flexing at his side.
"And yours, I'm hopeful," Oleander replied serenely, and was rewarded with a slight, surprised smile.

Russell turned to walk away, and Aiden asked, “Are you the new tenant? I’m Aiden; I own the tattoo shop next door to you. The Ink Kink!”
Russell paused, his back still to Aiden, looking at him over his shoulder. Which gave Aiden an absolutely spectacular view of his ass, which Aiden was sure was firm enough to bounce any number of quarters off of.
“Yes,” Aiden’s new neighbor confirmed, and then continued to walk to the back door of his new shop. He walked inside without another word, shutting the door firmly behind him.
“Well then,” Aiden said, his brain still trying to figure out what the fuck just happened, “nice to meet you.”

It would be easier, Nathaniel thinks, if James would get married. But every suitor, no matter how handsome or beautiful or rich or intelligent, he refused.
“Why do you not marry?” Nathaniel had asked him once.
James had smiled at him over his tumbler of gin, his amber eyes dancing in the firelight of nearby torches. Instead of answering, he’d asked, “Why do you not marry, my dear friend?”
Nathaniel’s cheeks had warmed, and he had stuttered through his answer. “I will—I shall. I’m just…” he gestured out with his glass, looking out over the gardens, “waiting for the right person.” The truth was he’d always been content to spend his life buried in his books. Until James had come along. Beautiful, confident James, who was everything Nathaniel never knew he wanted in a companion.
James had reached out, steadying Nathaniel's hand, clinking his tumblr against James’s glass. He’d stared right into Nathaniels' wide eyes as he said softly, “As am I.” He’d held Nathaniel’s gaze, and for one wild, desperate moment, Nathaniel thought James may lean in and kiss him. But James had only lifted his glass to his mouth for another sip, before standing up and offering his arm to Nathaniel to return back to the house.

But when a woman's dead body is found in just the right place to cause a riot that will draw in his friends, Jan Tarlo - who swore years ago to stop making bad decisions, or indeed any decisions whatsoever - gets drawn into a web of political intrigue that forces him further and further back into his past.
