Summary
Sam Winchester’s life is finally perfect. He’s got the perfect girlfriend, he’s been accepted to the perfect law school, and he hasn’t seen his brother in two years or his father in longer still. He’s even managed to tame the automatic reactions drilled into him through years of fighting monsters and training with his father. Hunting is a thing of his past, and he’s happy to leave it there.
In the correct order of things, Dean should now show up and fetch him to come search for their father, who has disappeared amid strange EVP recordings in Southern California. Jessica should die on the ceiling as their mother did, fueling Sam’s need to get out on the road and hunt. But . . .

Summary
“Did you find it, yet?” His dad asked, his face swimming in Dean’s vision.
“Find...Find what?” Dean asked, his own voice sounding muffled to himself. The tilting of the world got more violent. Dean staggered to the side, catching himself on the wall by his shoulder. Something was wrong. Something was really wrong.
“Dean? Dean!” His dad was shouting. He saw his dad’s flashlight disappear and a hand was waving in front of Dean’s face. “What’s going on here?”
“I don’t—” Something was dripping from his nose. “I don’t know. My head—”
Dean gritted his teeth and bowed over, squeezing his eyes shut as he tried to alleviate the pain. God, it felt like his brain was inflating until it was too big for his head. He lifted his gun hand to his nose, wiping, and pulled back to see a dark stain on his hand.

Or, Dean's on a hunt with his dad when his brain gets scrambled by whatever they were after. When his dad begins to insist that the only way to kill the monster is for Dean to die, Dean doesn't even think to question it. But Dean puts off the inevitable to do one last thing—say goodbye to Sammy. Sam, as it turns out, does have questions.

“Sammy…” Dean’s voice has changed. It’s the voice he’s always used to soothe him. Maybe sometimes it even worked. He takes a step closer, gently touches his back. “He just drank too much, you know how he gets. He doesn’t mean it. He’s just… Dad.”
He says it soft, like a prayer. But it sounds more like an excuse.
Sam whirls around. Eyes burning. Chest rising too fast. Face to face with Dean, he’s shouting now:
“HE’S NOT JUST DAD, DEAN! HE’S AN ASSHOLE! HE USES YOU, HE HURTS YOU, AND I’M DONE PRETENDING IT’S OKAY! DO YOU GET THAT OR NOT?!”
He towers over him, furious. Dean backs up, hitting the hood of the Impala.
“Stop yelling, Sam…” he says, weakly.-

Sam and John were fighting again.
Dean was no stranger to it, really. He’d just expected them to stop once the vampires had been taken care of. Actually, no, he hadn’t expected that; he’d hoped for it. The logical part of him knew that it would take a lot more stewing and angrily bitten out orders and slamming of doors before they got anywhere near their own special brand of ‘making up.’ It was just like before Stanford, and just like then, it was stressful and riled Dean’s inner Omega up like nothing else.
Dean hated feeling like he was going to be left behind.
