Summary
Duke wanted it stated on record that he'd not done this to "cause a scene" and he definitely did not need babysitting. He was eleven years old and he was fine, thank you very much. The main reason it ended up this way was because he really needed to get back to searching for his parents without a certain costumed busybody taking up the entire night with his issues. Duke had identified the problem, found the solution, and took the steps to reach it. Done and dusted.
Now if people could stop freaking out about it, that'd be great.

That’s nothing new. Elaine can see enough of the city in the background to tell that the Rogue is nowhere near the hospital. Really, this is just a typical day in Gotham, nothing that would normally distract her from listening to Jay’s concerns about his cousin. But there’s a vigilante with a bat across his chest fighting Condiment King. And it’s not Batman.
“I’ll call you back,” Elaine says, gaze fixed on the screen.

Because there’s no beating Gotham. She’s going to be as she always has been since inception. People like them, people like Duke, Riko, the other Robins across Gotham, Batman, even some of the rogues, are by definition: insane. Aware and accepting of defeat but assured that they will be the ones to change Gotham, engaging in hopeless repetition and infallibly sure that there is a possibility for a new result. Maybe Duke doesn’t fully get Batman and his bad guys and all the mayoral candidates who lie through their teeth saying 'this time will be different I promise I swear' but he gets his Robins. He gets the audacity of youth. More than that, he understands that you’re only crazy if it doesn’t work.

Duke Thomas Week 2025 - Day 2: Family
The drainpipe outside the window was broken. Well, most drain pipes all over Gotham are broken seeing as it was Gotham, but tonight it was really pissing Duke off. He laid there in the trashbag damp summer heat in an apartment somewhere maybe half way across the city from his childhood home. If he closed his eyes he could picture it: his extensive collection of play spell books that it took him years to accumulate, his poster from his visit to the city planetarium’s special dinosaur exhibit. His parents had surprised him with tickets and his father had hefted Duke onto his shoulders so that he could see the real life Brachiosaurus skeleton up close. He wanted to stay there, to stay in the fantasy but the bed sheets he was on top of were too thin and the air was too stale. The water from the pipe was familiar but dripping but in the wrong rhythm.

Duke was confused,so confused when he woke up,his bones were sore,really sore like the time he broke his arm at soccer practice but everywhere and way worse. He also wasn't at home in bed anymore,he was lying on a rooftop!?!Why wasn't he at home,where was mama and daddy!?! Duke felt his breath quicken as he sat up,he wasn't wearing his robin pajamas that he'd gone to bed in last night he was wearing some weird yellow suit,it kinda looked like Batman's suit but yellow and without the cape .It was also heavy and waaaay to big!Duke also had a helmet on his head,it was also really heavy.Why was he wearing all these weird clothes??
Duke noticed that there was a lady kneeling in front of him,she looked panicked,she was wearing weird clothes and she kept talking to herself.Maybe she knew where his parents were.

Despite it being the narrows the streets were still packed with people,gotham was a major city afterall and so many (annoying) tourists swarmed to the city every year to see the pretty architecture or to get a glimpse of the fabled vigilantes that swung through the city at night.
Duke used to look up to the bats as well before he saw the truth,Batman wasn't some hero. He didn't come when Duke and his parents needed him,he didn't stop the joker from ruining his life,he didn't even kill the sick clown!! He just threw him back into arkham where he'd eventually break out and kill more innocent people,batman wasn't helping anyone he was just delaying the inevitable…Annoying hero worship of Batman aside the tourists had one good thing about them,they usually carried large amounts of money on them, often cash which was good news for a hungry duke who could use some money for a quick meal.
