Summary
Lemon blinks once. Twice. Tangerine is still there, a mirage from Lemon’s dreams come to life. If there’s one thing he can remember with searing clarity, it’s finding Tangerine on the floor, covered in rapidly-cooling blood and ominously still. It doesn’t make sense that he would be here, now, as if he’d walked from the train wreck straight back to Lemon-shouldn’t be possible that he might’ve done exactly that. Lemon stares at him. Tangerine stares back, and then he says, “Didn’t check my pulse, did ya?”

Summary
Lemon dips down onto his elbows, taking the strain off his shoulders as they kiss, and the gold pendant hanging from his neck lands in the hollow of Tangerine’s throat like an ember from a wildfire. Tangerine hadn’t been able to make himself look directly at it since he’d looped it over Lemon’s head and left it there, in the Shinkansen bathroom. He had thought-as much as it could be said he’d been thinking, then, as much as operating solely on rage and pain-that if Lemon was…gone, dead, dumped in a fucking bathroom by some asshole, he might as well take said asshole out with him. It’d been ironic that the fucking American’s interference had only hastened the end of that plan, and, truthfully, the only thing he’d really been upset about, in the end, was that the stupid girl was still alive.

Tangerine might've overestimated his own ability to have normal, casual sex with Lemon after the Tokyo job.

Summary
“How ‘bout instead of plotting premeditated murder off the clock, why don’t you think of something creative to do with that emancipated right hand of yours,” Lemon says, tucking back into his plate. “Take a pottery class, learn to watercolour. You wanna point and shoot so bad? I’ll buy you a camera.”
“I’m gonna point and shoot on your smart arse when we get home,” Tangerine says darkly from the corner of his mouth, eyes cutting across Lemon at a bawdy angle. “Mark my words on that one.”

Summary
The unspoken truth that he’s too weak to bathe himself properly stands in the room between them like a third silent body. Tangerine almost wishes his vocal cords were truly thrashed and ruined so he wouldn’t have to acknowledge it aloud, wouldn’t have to admit defeat before the battle ever began.
He’s sitting beside the tub, awkwardly wedged between the toilet and the wall, head lolled off to rest on a towel folded under his cheek there on the edge of the bath. Breaths come shallowly, almost in haggard pants from the mix of nausea and exhaustion. Everything still smells like hospital antiseptic, blood, and electrical fire. It’s been three days since the train went off-rail—at least according to Lemon’s dodgy appraisal of time—and Tangerine still can’t burn the scent of near-death out of his nose.
