    Summary

He had asked her, once why it was that she refused to eat, to sleep, as if that would amount to anything, as if her ill-health may call to her husband home, as if her constantly nearly killing herself with her own foolishness again and again would implore Odysseus to return faster, sooner, as if she held a noose around her neck that slowly, slowly tightened in silent threat every passing year.

She, in response, had simply said that he did not understand.

The interaction had come following an infection where he had spent days watching her vomit until there was only bile left for her to retch. He had been frustrated with her for weeks afterwards.

(Penelope falls sick just as Telemachus is about to leave for his journey to Pylos. He does not take it well).

    Summary

Years passed, and Princess Penelope of Sparta continued to bloom in every way that Athena could have hoped for.

Once, she had been a child with promising weaving abilities. Now, she was approaching womanhood, and her talent grew in tandem, seemingly by the day. Once, she had been a clever girl who knew how to sharpen her own mind. Now she could truly wield it, keep it shaped as with a whetstone, while none around her knew she held such a powerful weapon at all.

For who would suspect the sweet blade of her smile? The threads her words could join and unravel, pulling those around her into whatever greater tapestry she aimed to create. How could they find guile in her eyes when none existed, and all that passed her lips was no less than the truth she believed? What did it matter that those truths kept them guided by her hands, weaving their actions down her desired path as if they were suspended within her loom?

    Summary

Athena, like many gods, had her favorites. Warriors who excelled at battle strategy and techniques. Politicians who excelled at persuading. But those were not her only domains. They brought her glory, yes, but weaving was what brought her joy. So she was very pleased to finally find a young weaver who had the spark she was looking for.

    Summary

It has been over six months since Odysseus returned, and the happiness of having him home is almost too much to be believed.

Though that doesn't stop Penelope's nightmares. Or the awful clawing fear that reaches for her whenever she is alone, when he or Telemachus are out of her sight.

But what does it matter? She wishes to soothe their pains, not burden them with her own. She is fine. She is fine.

(Or, a fic in which Penelope is the one being cared for and comforted for once.)

    Summary

“Please don’t go,” she croaked. He froze, and then settled back down beside her, brushing more tears from her cheeks. “Don’t leave me, please—“ his face softened.

“Oh,” he breathed, climbing back into bed beside her and settling her into his lap as he leaned back against the rough bark of their tree-bed. She cried in earnest now, not able to bite back the sobs that came from deep within her, from the absence she had lived with for longer than she had lived with him. She clung to his waist, his shoulders, his neck and he held her to him tightly, gently, as if she were a delicate artifact he couldn’t afford to drop. “I won’t,” he said, voice rough and reverent, as if the words held as much weight as an oath to the gods. “I won’t ever leave you again.” He stroked her hair as he said it over and over again, sincerity deep in his voice like he could not tell a lie if he wanted to. And for her part, the tears would not stop, though her cries quieted the longer he held her to him, now wordless rivers flowing down her face, the physical manifestation of so many years spent waiting.

    Summary

The Bath Chambers were aglow with the gentle flicker of braziers, their low amber light casting soft-moving shadows along the stone walls, which here were dressed with polished woods, dark with age and fragrant with oil. The flickering glow played across the ripples of steam rising from the waters, gilding the mist in molten gold. Every breath was full of warmth and the rich, sweet scent of blossoms – water lilies, thyme, creamy roses – their petals drifting lazily on the surface of the water like offerings to some forgotten goddess.

Or the goddess-like being floating in their waters.

Helen tilted her head back slightly, closing her eyes for a moment, letting the scented heat sink into her skin, her hair damp and curling at her nape like threads of a pale cloud. Somewhere outside, Uncle Icarius’ palace stirred with preparations. The courtyards and feasting halls would soon fill with noble guests for the festival of Hera Gamēstόlos, though the true celebration would be for her.

    For Beloved Penelope.
