Summary
Odysseus, Prince and Knight of Ithaca, knows he will not be chosen as Princess Helen's husband and protector, no matter how well he performs in the tournament for her hand. He came to gather information and forge allies, but most of all to prove what he — and Ithaca — were capable of. It was the path laid out before him by the Goddess Athena, and would lead to greatness.
But, a chance encounter in Sparta's marketplace changes everything, and challenges the entire course of his life and purpose...
“Though it is in Princess Helen’s name, I know other ladies may offer their favor,” he went on, and while his words didn’t waver his heart seemed caught in his throat, even as it drummed powerfully against his ribs. The noisy chatter of other conversations threatened to drown him out, and he leaned toward her again, unable to look away from her gaze. “Will you be offering yours?”
The flush returned to her cheeks, and her smile bloomed wide. “That depends,” she said, after a moment of thought, lovely eyes soft and sweet, “on who is looking to earn it.”
An odypen Knight AU.

Summary
“Does it please you?” she asked, careful to reach for the right tone, but unable to school her features in the same way. She had done nothing to draw this god’s attention other than her crime mere hours ago, and she did not care to gain affection with it. “Mortals killing each other?”
Ares tossed his head back with a laugh and walked a little circle there on the balcony, an almost boyish gesture of pure delight. “Penelope!” he said when he was finished, leaning his forearms on the railing to meet her eye evenly. “Don’t you know what you are?”
Penelope knew no answer to that, though she wasn’t sure she was meant to.
“To answer your question,” Ares said, “yes, it does, but that’s not the point.”

Or: In her panic, Penelope acts rashly, believing herself to have violated Zeus’ divine law of Xenia. Luckily, she has an unexpected supporter.

Summary
Morpheus, the God of Dreams, takes pity on the King and Queen of Ithaca. Odysseus’s return is many years away, yet his and Penelope’s minds find each other in sleep. It’s both a blessing and a curse, and sometimes all that keeps them going.
Queen Penelope stepped into the dream as easily as crossing a threshold, and with her came the sun, as if Helios's carriage rode atop her billowing black hair. The carnage vanished in her presence, the ground no longer a battlefield but a sloping grassy hill dotted with olive trees. Her bright blue eyes almost glowed, searching the hillside with clear intent.
The King of Ithaca stood, gazing at her as if she were a vision of Aphrodite herself. The blood streaking his face and staining his hands evaporated in the wake of her sunlight, the dead bundle in his arms vanishing with it.
Morpheus stared as well, unable to believe that she stood before them. It was no shaped dream becoming a nightmare, no conjuration of the King’s mind to protect himself. It was her, slipping into his dream as if it were a room in their home. Answering her husband’s desperate cries.

Summary
“The physician came in earlier,” Odysseus explained, helping her up slightly enough just so she could swallow, tipping the contents into her mouth. “He said you had a mild fever.”
Fever. Penelope resisted the urge to groan.
She had not fallen ill — well, physically ill — when her husband was away, yet now only a few weeks after his return she falls victim to a fever. A part of her wished to find amusement in the irony of it.
(Penelope falls ill. Penelope has fever dreams. They are not pleasant — hardly anything is pleasant when it comes to fevers, really. At the very least, Odysseus is there).

Summary
“I am most delighted,” Penelope had said, fingers tightening gently around Ctimene’s hand, her voice earnest with joy. “Truly, most delighted – that Odysseus has a sister. For I–” and there she had laughed softly, as though confessing some girlish hope, “ –I was raised in a house of men, you see. Only brothers I had, loud and brawling, and no beloved sister. I had always longed for an elder sister. And now, the gods have granted one to me at last.”
She looked to Ctimene with wide open eyes, searching for the spark of shared sentiment. But the warmth she offered was not returned.
Ctimene had frowned, her lips parting with a slowness that suggested the words had waited long behind her teeth. She drew back just enough to reclaim the space between them, cold.
(or, in the early days after her arrival to Ithaca, Penelope talks to Ctimene in an effort to get closer to her new husband's sister - it does not go so well)

Summary
This is a story actually based off of Athena and Medusa and the erasure of the story of women who are brought justice BY the bringer of justice—Athena.
----
After Odysseus comes back, Antinous isn't killed on the spot. Which means that when Penelope saw Odysseus and confirmed it was him, she was utterly relieved, only to see him keel over with a blooming red stain from the sword in him driven in by Antinous, the very suitor who's haunted her halls for three years.
This makes Penelope plummet into a deeper depression, and this makes Telemachus fall into a spiral and despair from the fact his father came back only to be killed.
Penelope is desperate for help, for a helping hand, for someone to hold her in their lap like Odysseus would.

The easing of night terrors by relearning the palace grounds.
Or:
His heart does not beat abnormally. His breath still rises with his lungs. The room does not ring with the echo of his voice.
Not this time.
Telemachus hasn't woken, either. His voice is not raised, not panicked in that way that makes Odysseus sprint to his room. That rules out his boy.
There it is again. The soft sound of sheets shifting right beside him, of a figure searching for him in the dark of the palace.
The culprit: the love of his life.

Summary
It has been over six months since Odysseus returned, and the happiness of having him home is almost too much to be believed.
Though that doesn't stop Penelope's nightmares. Or the awful clawing fear that reaches for her whenever she is alone, when he or Telemachus are out of her sight.
But what does it matter? She wishes to soothe their pains, not burden them with her own. She is fine. She is fine.
(Or, a fic in which Penelope is the one being cared for and comforted for once.)

Summary
“Will my father really return?”
The world itself seemed to pause at the sound of the question. The winds soften, the grass stilled, the distant bird songs grow quieter, and Grandmother was still silent, pondering.
The silence stretched over the hills, over the planes, over the island, over the vast expanse of the very ocean.
Still, he waited, waited because he had been waiting all of his life, waited because even he knew there was no taking back his words, waited because he feared that if he stopped, the very foundations of the earth and sky would crumble.
(Three years after the end of the war, and Ithaca's King still remains missing while its queen slowly crumbles from within, leaving only the prince to try and salvage the remains of their kingdom.
And while in the underworld, Odysseus does not find his Mother, but rather, someone else.)

Summary
"Penelope did not know what it was, this shining image that visited her. A ghost, she was tempted to say. But that was impossible. The mirage gleamed too brightly to be a ghost, and Odysseus was not dead. Odysseus was too clever to be dead."
"She was a trick. She had to be. A damned Calypso trick. She was made of light, or starshine, or ocean foam. Not real. Impossible. His Penelope was on Ithaca. His Penelope was as old as he was. His Penelope was waiting."
--
Odysseus sees flashes of the Spartan princess he fell in love with while languishing on Calypso's island. Penelope sees fleeting glimpses of the mischievous king she married while alone in Ithaca.

Summary
[‘Clever, clever Penelope,’ the shadows mocked, twisted versions of herself dancing on bloodstained walls. ‘You didn’t hold out enough. You were not strong enough. You couldn’t hold on just a little more for him.’
Her own voice echoed in her own head, as she watched the shadows flicker on the walls, and then down to the fire, burning through a wide-eyed corpse, arrow through his throat, expression permanently placed in a rictus of horror and fear.
‘Burn, Penelope, burn, for your unfaithfulness.’]
“Penelope?” Helen asked, softer, almost like she was speaking to a startled animal, jolting Penelope out of her thoughts of that day. “Breakfast.”
“I’m not hungry,” she whispered, shaking the way Helen’s voice sounded like her own from her head. “I’m going to–” Weave, she was about to say, but she paused, realizing that she didn’t have to weave anymore. “-- go back to work.”
“Pen, you just woke up. Odysseus and Telemachus are worried,” Helen continued, drawing closer to her, and Penelope startled, seeing a flash of Antinous in her movements. Helen paused, seeing the hesitation in her face, bringing her hands up to show she was unarmed, the universal gesture of showing that she wasn’t a danger.

Summary
The wind comes early, salt-laced and restless, tugging at the sails before the sun has fully risen. The sea is silver in the half-light, gleaming like a blade. A dozen black ships line the shore, each a beast of burden groaning under the weight of war—of spears and shields, of men too young and men already weary, six hundred in all. Horses stamp and snort. Armour glints faintly. The world smells of brine and bronze and things left unsaid.
And there is the horizon, wide and unblinking, where the gods keep their secrets.
Already, Ares drums his fingers against his shield. Athena watches from behind a veil of cloud, sharp-eyed and silent. Apollo cords his bow in the east. Even the Fates lean in, breathless. The heavens tilt toward bloodshed.
But the dawn stretches her fingers across the sky, rosy and pale, as though the morning itself hesitates—softening what must be done.
Odysseus steps forward. His cloak hangs from his shoulders, sword glinting beneath it at his hip. He looks impossibly far away already, though he hasn’t left yet.
But his eyes—his eyes are on her.
A dual-timeline look at Odysseus and Penelope—memory and absence side by side.

She is still not sure he is real.
Though the olive tree bed's leaves sway with wind even indoors, solid and standing; though he is right there, arms wrapped tightly around her middle, his head pillowed on her chest as if he belongs—and oh, how he does—nothing feels real.
Or:
Penelope has learned to sleep during the day, a habit that isn't broken by Odysseus' return. In the quiet, she reflects.
