LaVante wasn’t exactly sure when or where the line had been crossed - 10 years ago? Maybe 15.
Business partners had come to mean something else altogether to them, though LaVante was acutely aware that what that precise meaning was had never been discussed. They rarely left one another’s company, shared businesses, stocks, properties, assistants, mortal blood.
Maybe the blood had been what started it. The two of them luring some hapless mortal to HJ’s fancy apartment, promising them wealth and riches and then draining them until they were barely alive.
LaVante struggles with his feelings about his and HJ's relationship, and deals with it by having sex.

Summary

“I’m not asking to share,” Zaeth says; Mitch turns to stare at him, baffled. Zaeth is leaning over the coffin lid now in a way that’s really emphasizing his bulging biceps.
(Mitch does not have much visible muscle. He’s strong, of course, but it’s not beautiful in the way Zaeth’s is. Zaeth looks every bit like a body builder, a human, and Mitch looks more like roadkill that simply cannot be torn apart. Like putty. Like cement. Something is inherently inhuman about him, and though he possesses the strength, it is not beautiful.

HJ doesn’t make LaVonte sign a contract when he turns him.
They’re on coke, because of course they’re on coke, and they’re also on the Golden Gate Bridge, miles and miles above rushing water. That wouldn’t mean anything to LaVonte, not yet. HJ just likes the sick feeling it gives him, knowing he can’t cross it. Likes that pushback. Something he can’t control.
He’s patient about it – so patient. Hundreds of years of patience. Eventually, humanity will carve out some new route, or dam upstream, and HJ will have this too.
