Bilbo disappears the same night Thorin and his nephews are brought down to the stone to heal. Disappearing is the best word they can come up with, though they know him not to be gone and they know where he comes in and out—the tunnels of the mines run deep, most entrances blocked by the destruction of the dragon, a little opening that would never fit the broad shoulders of a dwarf yet is no problem at all for a hobbit.
