She heard him take a deep, shaky breath. “Oh. I… I see.”
She saw his hand- bigger than hers, with long, nimble fingers, calloused palms- reach for her, hesitantly, and she accepted it without even thinking. He squeezed comfortingly, and she looked back up at him. Tears shone in his eyes, but he was forcing a smile. The pain he was so clearly in broke her heart.
“Hey, Marinette,” he gasped out, plainly suppressing a sob. “I’m Adrien. We’re best friends.”
