“The Basket wasn’t the only thing you took from Kittunheim that day, was it?”
“No,” Odin admitted. And then, slowly, as if unloading a great weight he had carried for far too long, he continued: “In the aftermath of the battle, I went into the temple. The Basket was there on the altar… and when I neared it, I heard a tiny, pitiful mewling. A kitten… tinier than any I had ever seen, its eyes not even open yet. No littermates. And the markings of the fur made it clear who sired it.”
Whiskers quivering, Loki closed his eyes, his breath caught in that vulnerable moment between ignorance and truth.
Note: I kinda feel like I should label this "Crack Treated Seriously," but the only "crack" part is that the alternate names are kinda silly? I think if I had more time to put into it I could make it less silly, but eh, take it for what it is.

Post "Thor".
Loki is dead. Loki took his own life rather than face his family for another moment, and Thor doesn't understand why it had to come to this. Cast away on Earth, he was as unaware of the sequence of events that led to the shattering of the Bifrost as he was helpless to stop them.
Odin and Frigga do know why, however, and even if they're too late to spare one son with the truth, they can do that much for the child they have left. At long last, they tell Thor the truth about Loki, how he came to be a part of their family, and where he came to them from. The revelations and the horror that go along with them nearly break Thor as well. However, he does his best to struggle along under the weight of memories of a better past, for the sake of giving his little brother a proper farewell.

And, as ever, there is nothing but silence from the corpse of the Asgardian man. Well... technically Asgardian. Because the ghost that’s been haunting my dreams every night since we took aboard all the bodies we found in the vicinity of the Statesman – or whatever the thing was called before it was nothing more than space debris – made it very clear it wasn’t as simple as that.
Never failed to call him her son, though. And clearly she cared a great deal about his remains being properly seen to. But as soon as I started talking Asgard she assured me that was not the resting place she had in mind. No, she wanted her son buried under the snows of Jotunheim. For reasons that I couldn’t pretend to understand.

Some people won’t accept that the thing they desire most in this world will not make them happy. They have to possess it before they understand what a hollow thing it is. That if they want happiness they have to look elsewhere. My son... My son believed he wanted a throne.”
“So you let him have it,” I finish for him. Finding I can say the words without judgement.
“Are my people suffering under his rule?”

He wasn’t ever certain when he’d first realized that he was always given his slice of apple second, but he did know that he’d frowned, brows knitted together as he stared down at his slice to keep from looking at Thor. It was a silly thing to care about, and likely untrue in any case. A thing to dismiss, for it was, perhaps, just circumstance; they only spent afternoons together like this once a month, and so perhaps he’d forgotten the times when he’d been given his half first.
