Summary
“Mind your tongue, beloved,” Armand warns in his most sticky sweet, honeyed voice. “I used to take great care in putting insolent brats like you in their place.”
“Yeah? Well…” Daniel leans back and spreads his legs further, an invitation, preening under Armand’s gaze as the vampire drinks him in. He looks up beneath dark eyelashes and flashes his most provocative smile, never breaking eye contact. “They weren't me, were they?”

Summary
“Finish it,” Armand says abruptly, reaching out to touch the bottom of the glass. He tilts it up to Daniel’s lips, the words an imperious command.
Daniel barely opens his mouth in time. He chokes on what’s left of the watery crème de menthe and crème de cacao, but Armand doesn’t lower the glass until he’s finished every last drop. His head swims, partly because he’s tipsy and partly because of the brain freeze.
Armand withdraws the empty glass, sets it aside, and grabs a napkin off the bar. He dabs Daniel’s lips with it, brushing the bare pad of his thumb across Daniel’s chin. His skin is warm and smooth, slightly clammy with condensation borrowed from the glass.
Oh my God, Daniel thinks. Don’t lick him don’t lick him don’t lick—
Clearing his throat, Armand sets the napkin aside. “You’re a journalist?”
“Yeah,” Daniel replies hastily, looking away. “You were listening in?”
“I caught part of your chat with Louis. You were going to interview him?”
“Was being the operative word. I’m not sure that would’ve worked out.”

Summary
“What happened to your assessment of him as my rent boy? Hypocritical of you to…indulge in him after casting it as an aspersion.”
Daniel inhales, instantly prepared to use words, words, words to help [Armand] save face and also save his own ass because that’s his fucking forté. “My mistake. Your semi-estranged companion and extremely astute business partner used me as a glorified sex toy last night, and it turns out I hardcore needed to be objectified. I doubt this will come as a shock, but that worked wonders for my aging, ailing ego. I, uh…” He shoots a deferential sidelong glance at [Armand], who’s giving him a guarded look. “Wouldn’t mind if it happened again, but that’s at his discretion.”
Louis gives [Armand] a look that sits somewhere at the crossroads of amusement, bafflement, and contempt. Razor-edged panic flares in Daniel’s stomach; he has no idea why such a specific cocktail of emotion should get to him when it’s aimed straight past him at someone else.
“Let me have this, Louis,” [Armand] says with quiet urgency, his grasp on Daniel’s shoulder tightening. “He’ll be gone soon enough as it is.”

Summary
In the middle of the courtyard, crushing the green grass under its weight, was a stone tomb, covered in chains. Taking Claudia by the arm, Armand pulled her back, ignoring the indigent glare she gave him, before closing the short distance between himself and the coffin. He circled the stone, tracing his hand over the old, rough surface as his eyes followed the rusted chains. He glanced down at the lock where a folded paper was tucked beneath the oil-stained metal. He plucked the paper and unfolded it, scanning over the words before reading them aloud to the others.
“We have made a grave mistake,” Armand said. “We are not able to care for this fledgling. He will ruin us all,” Armand tore the note in half and tossed it over his shoulder.

Summary
Armand thinks himself great at first impressions. He ought to be, having spent so many years twisting himself into whatever form most pleases.
But when he met Daniel, he had already shattered into the pieces of himself that are loud, insincere, cruel. The pieces that are not worth loving, some part of his mind whispers, in a voice that could belong to Louis or to Lestat or to any number of others whom he has tried to fit inside of himself and keep, an endeavor which has only ever ended in the same blistering disappointment.
And now—as he is sitting in the wreckage of another failed attempt at shaping himself into a home, covered in plaster dust from an outburst of rage only a fraction as bright as that which he deserved—now all there is left in front of him is Daniel.
